Russia's Yandex invests $15M in US search underdog (AP)

Yandex's investment in Blekko comes four months after the Russian company raised its profile in the U.S. with an initial public offering of stock that hasn't been a big hit on Wall Street so far.

Yandex's support is a coup for Blekko, a search engine on a crusade to remove the junk that can clutter the results of market leader, Google, and its two main rivals, Yahoo and Bing.

Blekko, which employs 27 people in Redwood Shores, Calif., tries to fight the search litter, or spam, by relying on humans to use hash tags to highlight the most useful results under frequently searched topics.

Just four months after Blekko hit the market late last year, Google unveiled sweeping changes to its search algorithm in an effort to reduce the rubbish showing up in its results from so-called "content farms" and other websites that had learned how to dupe Google's formula into giving a high ranking to largely irrelevant content.

Despite those changes, many of the results that Google delivers on frequently searched topics such as health remain a "train wreck," said Rich Skrenta, Blekko's CEO and founder.

Russia is one of the few countries where Google is a laggard. Yandex's share in Russia is almost as large as the one Google holds in the U.S., The advantage hasn't been as nearly as lucrative for Yandex, whose revenue this year is expected to be about $650 million. Google's U.S. revenue this year is expected to be between $17 billion and $18 billion.

The disparity may be one reason investors haven't been too keen on Yandex N.V.'s stock since it was priced at $25 in a May IPO. The shares stood at $22.13, down 77 cents, in early afternoon trading Thursday. The stock peaked at $42.01 on its first day of trading.

Skrenta, though, believes Yandex can help Blekko broaden its reach and improve its results. Besides giving it more money, Yandex is letting Blekko use some of its servers. That will give Blekko the means to more than double the size of its search index, which currently spans about 3 billion Web pages on 750 servers, Skrenta said. A larger index means Blekko should be able to do a better job responding to search requests on obscure topics that currently give its search engine problems.

If it works out like Skrenta hopes, more people will start coming to Blekko when they are looking for a Google alternative instead of Bing and Yahoo, which together have a roughly 30 percent share of the U.S. search market.

"People are rooting for the underdog in this space," Skrenta said.

PERUGIA, Italy (Reuters) ? Amanda Knox was not a man-eater driven by her sexual urges but a young woman in love who was wrongly convicted of murdering her roommate, a lawyer for her ex-boyfriend said on Tuesday.

Prosecutors had tried to create a distorted image of Knox to pin her to the 2007 killing of British student Meredith Kercher, Raffaele Sollecito's lawyer said, and she likened the American to cartoon femme fatale Jessica Rabbit.

Knox was described as diabolical, a witch and a she-devil earlier in her appeals trial against verdicts that found her and Sollecito guilty of killing Kercher in 2007 during a sex game that turned violent.

Far from being sex-obsessed, Knox was a besotted and immature girl who barely spoke Italian when she was accused of the murder, Sollecito's lawyer Giulia Bongiorno said as defense lawyers began closing arguments.

"Knox could be compared to Jessica Rabbit," she said. "She may appear to be a man-eater. In reality, she was a faithful woman in love."

Jessica Rabbit was a voluptuous, sultry but faithful character from the 1988 movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," where she says: "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way."

Knox's personality has played a central role in the case. Prosecutors depict her as a cunning, sex-crazed girl who led her boyfriend in the attack on Kercher while defense lawyers argue her vixen image was created to justify a lack of motive.

"I think Amanda Knox has been portrayed like Jessica Rabbit because this character fits like a glove with the motive," said Bongiorno. "The character of a female dominatrix was needed."

EVIDENCE

Kercher's half-naked body with a slit throat and more than 40 wounds was found in November 2007 in the apartment she shared with Knox in the hilltop Umbrian town popular with foreigners studying Italian.

Knox, now 24, was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the murder while Sollecito got a 25-year sentence. Rudy Guede, an Ivorian drifter with a criminal record, is also serving time for taking part in Kercher's murder.

All three found guilty have maintained their innocence. Bongiorno argued there was no evidence linking her client Sollecito with the murder, saying he was implicated in the crime just because he happened to be dating Knox at the time.

Film of the two kissing outside the house where Kercher's body was found has been shown repeatedly on television since the murder and has been held up as evidence of Knox's supposedly cold-blooded cynicism.

However, Bongiorno said the kiss was not a sign of their perversion, but simply a sign of the affection the two shared.

She also pointed to a forensics review that discredited evidence used to convict the couple, especially its conclusion that traces of Sollecito's DNA found on Kercher's bra clasp could have been due to contamination.

The review -- which has strongly boosted Knox's hopes of being released -- also cast doubt on the reliability of DNA traces belonging to Knox found on the handle of a knife and Kercher's DNA on the blade.

A verdict in the trial is expected at the end of the week or early next week. Knox's family have said they are hopeful she will walk free after nearly four years behind bars.

The American student has won sympathy from many in the United States, where she is widely seen as an innocent abroad who fell into the clutches of a medieval justice system.

Regardless of the fact that they have accepted the most efficient workers, still they are struggling to meet their goals and objectives.

Although technical skills are essential in any business establishments, the skills needed for a successful business are not technical, but communication skills. These skills are often termed as soft skills since these are personal attributes that improve individuals' performance, interactions and career prospects. It is said that hard skills like technical skills can get you an interview, but soft skills can get you the job. Such skills are essential because of the following reasons.

First, a healthy working environment can be the result if effective communication runs in the company. Most of the time, workers use their skills to communicate. Even when they have their coffee break or when they are attending the meeting with their manager presiding, the ability to communicate is there. If poor communication exists between employees, there is a tendency that conflict might arise, which sometimes lead some workers not making it to work or division among the workers. If this situation would persist, the productivity of the workers will be affected. Nevertheless, creating a close bond among workers can happen if they are in a healthy working environment. Netflix signs pay TV deal for Dreamworks animation (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Online video rental company Netflix Inc said it won pay TV rights to Dreamworks Animation movies starting in 2013, the first time a major Hollywood studio has chosen an Internet streaming player over a traditional cable channel.

News of the deal drove Netflix's stock up nearly 7 percent to a high of $137.88 in early trade on Nasdaq on Monday.

Netflix did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

However, Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told The New York Times that the deal, worth $30 million per picture to Dreamworks over a number of years, was "game-changing" and represented a bet that viewers would soon no longer make distinctions between content streamed on the Internet or through cable.

The Netflix deal means Dreamworks -- the studio behind family friendly fare from "Shrek" to "Kung Fu Panda" -- is eschewing premium pay-TV operator HBO in favor of online streaming, the Times reported. HBO is a unit of Time Warner Inc.

"We are really starting to see a long-term road map of where the industry is headed," Katzenberg was cited as saying to the newspaper in an interview.

The content agreement comes days after Netflix, which has seen its share price decline sharply after a series of missteps, sealed an agreement to broadcast TV shows from Discovery Communications Inc.

Netflix needs to add more content to its streaming service to keep drawing in new customers and fend off competition from the likes of Amazon.com, Google Inc and Apple Inc.

Shares of the one-time Wall Street darling have fallen 50 percent in two months. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has apologized for failing to explain moves adequately, from a surprise price hike in July to a separation of its DVD-mail from streaming services, and the company is trying to win customers back.

But adding customers is suddenly proving difficult, with Netflix on the receiving end of heated complaints from customers still upset over the price hike announced in July.

It cut its subscriber forecast by 1 million, saying it now expected to have 24 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter. The last time Netflix reported a subscriber decline was the second quarter of 2007, when Blockbuster was aggressively pushing a DVD rental package called Total Access.

According to the Times, Netflix was quick to pump up the Dreamworks deal.

"This is one of the few family entertainment brands that matter," Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos was quoted as saying. "It's also a signal to people that we are in no way moving away from movies. Our programing is just reflecting more and more what people want."

Mirror, mirror on the wall... Yikes! There are five of me. No it's not incredible vanity, I'm surrounded by myself because I'm part of an interactive artwork that reinterprets Henri Matisse's seminal painting, Dance II, which depicts five figures dancing in a circle.

The interactive sculpture of the same name is by London-based designer Maxence Parache. It invites you to step a central chamber containing the two huge mirrors. "X" marks the spot, and as you approach it, the sculpture comes alive, projecting a storm of blue and white light onto your body.

Looking up, you see four reflections of yourself. Your body makes five, the number of dancers in Matisse's original.

Dance is exactly what you feel compelled to do in order to explore the artwork. Moving your body reveals that Parache's software - a modified combination of the open-source programming language, Processing, and projection software MadMapper - tracks your movement, mapping the projection onto the canvas of your body.

Parache cleverly captures the dynamism, naivety and suspense in Matisse's original. It also avoids the pitfalls of creating a playground without conceptual substance. "It's nice to turn the viewer into a user," he says. "To be able to amuse the people is the key of my practice."

The sculpture is part of Intel's Remastered exhibition for this year's London Design Festival. The exhibition is another chance to see other "remastered" works such as Midnight Toastie's beautiful version of Van Gogh's The Starry Night, which, like Parache's work, captures the essence of the original and augments it with a technological twist.

Remastered runs at The Old Truman Brewery, London, until Sunday.

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Ryan Braun stepped into the box when a familiar feeling overcame him. Just like in 2008, the Brewers homegrown slugger propelled Milwaukee back into the postseason.

"It's not new," Prince Fielder said. "That's what he does."

Braun hit a three-run, go-ahead homer in the eighth with chants of "M-V-P" ringing throughout the sellout crowd and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Florida Marlins 4-1 on Friday night to win their first division title since 1982.

"I think for me honestly, I live for that moment. You play the game to have the opportunity to play meaningful games down the stretch in September," Braun said. "I truly expected to come through in that situation."

Fielder also homered for Milwaukee, which clinched the NL Central and reached the postseason at the earliest date in team history after waiting 20 minutes for the Cubs to finish off their 5-1 win over the Cardinals.

With most of sellout crowd still in its seats, fireworks went off again after the Cardinals lost and fans were showered with confetti and streamers.

Nearly an hour after the Cubs' victory, Fielder took a victory lap around the field, hugging several of the nearly 5,000 fans that stayed to party.

Braun homered off Clay Hensley (6-7) to end a 1-for-16 skid. He then pointed his bat in the air toward owner Mark Attanasio and the fans before rounding the bases.

"I definitely knew I hit it pretty good. It felt amazing," Braun said. "It just feels so good, all of us as a team, to be in this moment."

It was reminiscent of his 2008 homer on the last day of the season that lifted Milwaukee to its first postseason appearance since winning the AL East in 1982. Now, they're back.

"It's eerily similar," said Braun, who signed a $105 million extension this season that keeps him in Milwaukee through 2020. "Having the opportunity to watch the last couple of innings of somebody else's game feels almost identical.

"Obviously a little better, though, because we won our division instead of the wild card," he said.

In 2008, the Brewers waited for the Marlins to eliminate the Mets before they could celebrate.

Shortly after the Cardinals' first out, the team congregated in the Brewers clubhouse, passing out champagne and preparing for its second celebration in four seasons.

The stadium has remained packed even though this season hasn't been as dramatic as '08. Milwaukee built a 10?-game lead midway through August over St. Louis, and even though the Cardinals whittled it down, time ran out.

"It means a lot, we've got a great team, the fans are with us all here," Fielder said. "I'm just glad we're able to do it, we've got a little ways to go, but I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this. Hopefully, we go all the way."

Milwaukee fell to the Cardinals in seven games in the 1982 World Series, but even that season they didn't have a home-field advantage like this.

The Brewers are 53-23 at Miller Park, one win away from tying the most home wins in franchise history.

Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo pitched into the eighth, setting two franchise records for strikeouts before leaving when Emilio Bonifacio singled and second baseman Rickie Weeks couldn't handle a throw that put two on.

Francisco Rodriguez (6-2) came in and struck out Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison to end the inning, pumping his fist and beating his chest after escaping the jam.

Corey Hart doubled off Hensley with one out and Morgan walked to bring up Braun. Milwaukee had been 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position before Braun's at-bat.

After fouling a pitch off and working the count to 3-1, Braun hit Hensley's slider to deep left-center field, hitting off the scoreboard supports, then returned for a curtain call from the crowd of 44,584.

"Ryan loves the big stage," Attanasio said.

John Axford converted his 44th save in 46 chances with a perfect ninth, including the last 41 in a row, but had to pause with two outs in the ninth when the Cubs-Cardinals score was displayed after Alfonso Soriano hit a three-run homer.

Milwaukee has made three previous trips to the playoffs, but never was assured a spot until either the next to last day or final day of the season.

Fielder's homer off Chris Volstad was his 35th this year, but that was the only mistake the lanky right-hander made. Volstad deserved better. He scattered five hits and struck out five, but hasn't won a start since July 10.

The Marlins tied it in the fourth when Sanchez doubled and scored on Petersen's two-out single. Braun made a diving catch in the fifth, setting the stage for his big at-bat.

"That may have been the turning point of the game," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said.

General manager Doug Melvin said his goal coming into the season was to drop confetti from the Miller Park roof, just like in 2008. In the offseason, he decided to keep Fielder, a free agent to be, and built the starting rotation by trading away his farm system's top talent.

In the span of two weeks in December, Melvin dealt his starting shortstop, backup center fielder, top pitching prospect, top hitting prospect and two pitchers who projected to be no worse than major league relievers.

The returns included 2009 AL Cy Young winner Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum. Melvin said the Brewers were all-in, just liked they were in 2008 when they traded for CC Sabathia at midseason.

The gamble paid off again, but it took longer than expected for rookie manager Ron Roenicke.

Milwaukee remained in third place behind Pittsburgh and St. Louis on July 25. Milwaukee then won 27 of 32 to take a 10?-game lead in the NL Central.

"I know the team always felt like we were going to play good ball," Roenicke said. "It didn't take long for us to turn that around."

Milwaukee joined the NL in 1998 and watched St. Louis win seven division titles while the Brewers remained mostly in the bottom of the division.

Things began changing when Attanasio, an L.A. investment banker, purchased the Brewers in September 2004 from Commissioner Bud Selig's family and steadily raised the payroll, up to more than $85 million to start this season.

Milwaukee holds losing records against the Phillies, Braves and Diamondbacks ? the other three NL teams in line to join them in the postseason. This time, the Brewers come in a team built on pitching and still has a potent offense.

"It's the most fun you can possibly have," Attanasio said. "The thing about all our guys, they really pull together."

NOTES: Marlins closer Leo Nunez admitted Friday to using fake documents and a fake ID to sign a professional contract more than a year ago and Dominican authorities arrested a man accused of falsifying Nunez's documents. ... Abbas rejects international peace blueprint

UNITED NATIONS?? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas strongly suggested Saturday that he would reject a peacemaking blueprint put forward by international mediators, saying he would not agree to any proposal that disregarded Palestinian conditions for the resumption of peace talks.

Abbas, who returned to the West Bank on Saturday after submitting a statehood bid at the United Nations a day earlier, told reporters accompanying him that he was still studying the proposal by the peacemaking Quartet ? the U.S., European Union, United Nations and Russia.

But he appeared to tip his hand by saying "we will not deal with any initiative" that doesn't demand a halt to Israeli settlement construction or negotiations based on borders before the 1967 War when Israel captured land the Palestinians claim for their state.

The Quartet statement made no such demands.

Abbas dug into his positions after resisting heavy, U.S.-led pressure to abandon his bid to have the U.N. recognize a state of Palestine in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. His willingness to stand up to Washington has won him newfound respect at home, where he had been considered a lackluster leader. The unilateral bid for statehood and U.N. membership reflects deep-seated Palestinian exasperation over 44 years of Israeli occupation.

Israel has had no comment on the Quartet plan to resume long-stalled negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel, which mediators regard as the only way to establish a Palestinian state. Israeli leader Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the long-standing conditions Abbas has put forth, saying talks must go forward without imposing terms.

Netanyahu opposes negotiations based on 1967 lines, saying a return to those frontiers would expose Israel's heartland to rocket fire from the West Bank. And he says the fate of settlements should be left to negotiations.

The Quartet urged both parties to draw up an agenda for peace talks within a month and produce comprehensive proposals on territory and security within three months. Mediators aspire to a final deal within a year, but similar plans have failed to produce a peace agreement in the past, and this latest proposal offered no program for bridging the huge differences that have stymied negotiations for most of the past three years.

The Quartet plan was meant to rechannel to negotiations any momentum the Palestinians would gain from their statehood application. A U.N. nod would not deliver any immediate changes on the ground: Israel would remain an occupying force in the West Bank and east Jerusalem and continue to restrict access to Gaza, ruled by Palestinian Hamas militants.

But Palestinians are hoping that any upgrade in their international status would give them more clout in any future talks with Israel.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon relayed the Palestinians' statehood request to the Security Council on Friday, shortly after Abbas formally submitted it. It is expected to be shot down there, either because it won't win the required support of nine of the Council's 15 members, or because the U.S. will make good on its threat to veto it. The Security Council will meet Monday to deal with the membership request, but final action is likely to take weeks or months.

Washington has been lobbying hard to muster enough support in the Council to block the statehood application so the U.S. won't have to resort to a veto ? something that would be frowned upon by the Arab world at a time when autocratic regimes are coming under assault there.

Abbas told reporters, without explaining, that he expected the Council to take action within weeks, not months. With Council support necessary to be admitted to the U.N. as a state, the Palestinians are expected to ask the U.N. General Assembly, where they enjoy broad support, to grant them a more modest status upgrade to nonmember observer state from permanent observer.

On board his plane, Abbas described himself as exhausted by the international efforts to wear him down but buoyant when he explained in a speech to the General Assembly why he had sidestepped the negotiating process that had been the cornerstone of international Mideast policy for nearly two decades.

The pressure "didn't affect our spirits to reach the target and to deliver the Palestinian message officially," he said.

Abbas noted, without elaborating, that some unspecified Arab states had also tried to pressure him to drop the statehood application.

Netanyahu, too, has been satisfied with the trip, and by the efforts of the U.S. and Western powers to resolve the longstanding conflict through talks, not international dictates.

"The hope is that the Palestinians will eventually understand that they cannot avoid entering negotiations," he told Israel's Channel 10 TV.

Talks for all intents and purposes broke down nearly three years ago after Israel went to war in Gaza and prepared to hold national elections that propelled Netanyahu to power for a second time. A last round, backed by the U.S., was launched a year ago, with the ambitious aim of producing a framework accord for a peace deal. But it broke down just three weeks later after an Israeli settlement construction slowdown expired.
