Republicans Only Have Four Little Problems This Election Cycle (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Election 2012 is proving to be more interesting than most initially expected. Even with the Democrat incumbent at the helm of a nation rife with economic turmoil, protesters in the streets and still at war within multiple foreign shores, it seems the GOP isn't offering much of a challenge. The good news is, Republicans are only facing four major challenges -- the candidates.

Rick Perry markets himself as a candidate in support of small government and liberty, yet he's associated with the Christian Dominionist perspective of authority -- a view that Christians have some sort of innate right to rule over others. In short, people of other faiths would find themselves living under the Judeo-Christian version of the Taliban. Before his supporters lash out, please ask yourselves where else you've heard the term "Army of God."

Also known for being business-friendly, Mitt Romney brings his particular faith, Mormonism. Is it this author's place to label the religion as a cult? Not necessarily. But readers still deserve to know some of the religion's practices are bizarre. If only the GOP could conceivably find a fiscally conservative candidate who wasn't comfortable with the idea of everyone who disagrees with them burning in a lake of fire for all eternity. Add to that Romney's obedience to a loyalty outside of his elected position and voters get nervous.

At least Herman Cain -- outside of his lack of understanding about gay rights -- he's only accused of sexually harassing a number of women. Based upon what we saw with Bill Clinton, this scene could pan out quite well for Cain, as long as accusers don't continue coming out of the woodwork. Were he to keep resembling a duck, folks are going to start believing he may be a duck.

Ron Paul brings the Republican Party a whole new set of problems, but not for the reasons a reader might think. The congressman from Texas is intent on restoring the U.S. back to its Constitutional principles of state's rights and individual liberties, elimination of the Internal Revenue Service and a return to sound money. Perhaps most importantly, he plans to bring troops home and end these needless wars. As he told Bill O'Reilly of Fox News, "I don't like demagogues."

He's certainly no mouthpiece for the status quo. Paul is a problem in being underestimated.
