UFC 137?s Three Stars: Diaz, Nelson and Cerrone

UFC 137?s Three Stars: Diaz, Nelson and Cerrone

UFC 137 was bizarre weeks before the card even started, with no-shows at press conferences, rearranging bouts, and a weighin that featured one fighter who didn't make weight and another one who learned the value of a good headbutt. But who stood out once the actual fights began?

No. 1 star -- Nick Diaz: Heading into UFC 137, Diaz promised that he always shows up for a fight. He came through, beating up on B.J. Penn so badly that Penn said that he would walk away from his 10-year MMA career. Then, Diaz launched into a string of expletives to call out Georges St. Pierre. It was not as smooth as Chael Sonnen's heel act, but it was more effective. Diaz will fight GSP on Super Bowl weekend.

No. 2 star -- Roy Nelson: Showing off an improved physique, he withstood the best that Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic had, and then took out the MMA legend in the third round. The win halted a two-fight losing skid.

No. 3 star -- Donald Cerrone: Speaking of streaks, Cerrone extended his winning streak to six with submission of Dennis Siver. He used his kickboxing prowess to knock Siver down, then smartly slapped on a rear naked choke to finish the fight. Next, he'll fight Nate Diaz at UFC 141, giving Cerrone his fifth fight in a year.

Those are Cagewriter's Three Stars. Who are yours? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Fish and birds gave Neanderthals fine dining

THEY may have been partial to a chunky slab of meat, but very early on Neanderthals also had a taste for fine dining treats like fish and small birds. The findings show that our long-lost cousins were cognitively advanced from the get-go, long before modern humans appeared in Europe.

Discoveries of jewellery and make-up at 50,000-year-old sites show that around the time they went extinct Neanderthals had a taste for the finer things in life. Now that evidence has been pushed back to their first appearance in Europe.

Bruce Hardy of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and Marie-H?l?ne Moncel of France's Natural History Museum in Paris analysed residues on stone tools found at Payre in southern France, which was occupied by Neanderthals between 125,000 and 250,000 years ago. They found traces of fish scales, feathers, wood, hide and starch, indicating that their owners were fishing, hunting small birds, processing wood and hides, and eating vegetables (PLoS One, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0023768). That goes against the view, still held by some, that Neanderthals hunted large game but were not capable of subtler tasks like spearing fish and catching birds.

An Overview of Dental Insurance

The money invested on dental surgeries and dental care is on the rise. Dental insurance helps the insurance policy holder have the amount spent on the dental care treatments through refunds. There are actually discount dental care plans which allow anybody to acquire heavy discounts on the dentistry costs. Teeth are our assets and they are vitally important just like any other organ in the body and also need good care. Dental insurance provides the policyholder with a listing of dentists by whom the services could be acquired on the market.

The policyholders must get the services only with the given listing of dentists. However most of the discount dental care plans do not exercise any type of restrictions as long as choosing the dentist on the policyholder's choice. Discount dental care plans are easier to receive as well as there is no age limit. Consequently ideal dental plans present higher support during heavy payments on the dentistry bills.

Inexpensive dental insurance plans:

There are many economical dental insurance plans that are mainly crafted for the children and spouse of the family. The family dental plans have reduced the expenses significantly for several dental care work just like cleaning, x-rays, fillings, uproot canals, orthodontics, fittings of braces and many others. The major aim of family dental insurance plans is to reduce the charges and as well provide dental care to the loved ones.

The sum is decreased with this dental insurance coverage because numerous dental insurance carriers provide free of charge or lessen amount dental care policy coverage for the children. The insurance coverage of these types of policies may differ broadly from one insurance company to another. Consequently just before selecting a plan as well as the insurance company the protection scope has to be checked out extensively. Family dental insurance is entirely more advanced than the individual dental insurance. They are both cheaper and money is preserved through reimbursements. The simplest and least difficult sort of dental insurance to get without any paper work for receiving the claims.

Important things to be checked before opting for the dental insurance coverage and policy:

The insurance holder need to make sure that everything is definitely covered under the dental insurance plan, as some will give you only checkup, that will be of no use if the insurance policy holder must get a full cover. When a good employer provides a dental insurance plan, it ought to be checked out for any coverage once again, as almost all of the companies do not provide full coverage to cut down the expense spent on the insurance policies however may give them for a benefit for the personnel. In these kinds of cases the staff should go for a private dental insurance policies covering the remaining dental treatment processes, which has been excluded in the personnel cover.

The waiting periods need to be examined. It is the time limit that the company will present the insurance policy holder to wait before he can enjoy the benefits of the plan. Certain policies may help make the policyholder wait for more than one year to take advantage of the benefit. If the policy owner likes to go for cosmetic dental surgeries just like teeth bleaching or whitening he or she should get a dental insurance plan which gives coverage, as only a few insurance companies provide such coverage for the higher payment.

Asus K53E-RBR4

There are plenty of budget laptops on the market, but the lower you move in terms of price the more limited your choices become. If you really can't afford to move beyond the $600-$650 range, you may be tempted by the Asus K53E-RBR4 ($629.99 list at Staples). It's a fine basic machine, with a handsome and austere design but no other bells and whistles to speak of, but a bit of comparative shopping will turn up more capable computers for about the same amount of money.

Design
The predominant hue of the K53E-RBR4 is a deep chocolate brown, and its lid is adorned with a textured pattern of interlocking horizontal and diagonal lines that gives the laptop a snakeskin feel. The only other feature on the lid is a silvery Asus logo, located just above center. You'll find that brown color when you open up the laptop as well, on the palm rest (where the texture continues) and the keyboard deck (where it gives way to a much smoother finish). There's plenty of black inside as well: glossy on the bezel surrounding the 15.6-inch, 1,366-by-768 widescreen display (which has a webcam embedded in the top portion), matte for the space between the Chiclet-style keys, the keys themselves, and the Altec Lansing speaker bar located just above them.

The keys were, for the most part, fine for typing, though detail-oriented power users may mind that there's no right Window key here: just Alt, the context-sensitive menu key, and a double-width control key. To the right of that are the four arrow keys, which reinforce that there are no dedicated media keys on this keyboard: The arrows double as Play/Pause, Rewind, Fast Forward, and Stop, and the volume controls are secondary functions assigned to F10, F11, and F12. At least there's also a number pad present on the right side, though its keys are slightly narrower than those used on the rest of the keyboard. The smooth touch pad is accompanied by two firm, clicky mouse buttons.

Measuring about 1.4 by 14.9 by 10 inches (HWD) and weighing 5.6 pounds, the K53E-RBR4 represents an approximately average amount of portability for a 15-inch budget laptop.

Features
The K53E-RBR4 offers hardware generally in line with what we've seen of other laptops in this price range. Its processor is an Intel Core i3-2330M, a dual-core chip that runs at 2.2GHz and can utilize four processing threads at the same type thanks to Intel's Hyper-Threading technology. Because the chip is a member of Intel's second-generation Core (aka "Sandy Bridge") family, you also get access to the full swath of the line's features, which include Quick Sync Video for accelerated video transcoding and Wireless Display 2.0 (WiDi) for streaming content from your laptop to your HDTV if you have a Netgear Push2TV adapter. The included 6GB DDR3 RAM and 640GB 5,400rpm hard drive are fine but unremarkable.

On the right edge of the K53E-RBR4 you'll find the DVD burner, two USB 2.0 ports, and the headphone and microphone jacks. Located near the left side of the front edge is a multiformat card slot. You'll find on the left edge the Ethernet jack, VGA and HDMI ports for outputting to an external display, and another USB 2.0 port; sorry, there's no USB 3.0 port here for extra-fast data transfers.

Asus includes on the K53E-RBR4 a large number of its own tools and utilities, including FancyStart (for changing the laptop's boot logo), LifeFrame 3 (for image and video recording and capturing), Power4 Gear eXtreme for easily switching between power-saving settings, and SmartLogon facial recognition software. Other, more generalized bloatware choices include the Bing Bar, Google Chrome, Windows Live Essentials 2001, and Microsoft Office Starter 2010.

In addition, several other services are available from Staples for customers who buy the K53E-RBR4 there. These include setting up the new system, data transfer from your old PC to your new one, software installation, and tech support and protection plans that range in price from $14.99 to $169.99.

Performance
Asus K53E-RBR4 When compared with a number of other budget laptops we've recently tested, the K53E-RBR4 came out on the upper end of the lower end of the performance rankings. Its score of 1,786 in our Futuremark PCMark 7 full-system benchmark was higher only than the 1,620 we saw from the Gateway NV55S05u ($579.99 list, 4 stars), though that system had other benefits we'll get to presently. The Asus' times in our Handbrake video conversion test (2 minutes 17 seconds) and Adobe Photoshop CS5 filtering test (5 minutes 18 seconds) put it ahead of not just the Gateway (with 3:33 and 7:48 respectively), but also the Samsung Scala NP300E5A-A01UB ($599.99 list, 4 stars). These results don't put it in the same league as either of our more expensive Editors' Choice laptops, the Asus U56E-BBL6 ($699.99 list, 4 stars) or the Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066AJU ($629.99 list, 4 stars), both of which are equipped with faster Core i5-2430M CPUs, but they're not bad for a machine of this price.

Gaming is another story, and far from the K53E-RBR4's strong suit. It earned only 10.4 frames per second (fps) in Crysis and 17.7fps in Lost Planet 2, in both cases at 1,024-by-768 resolution with medium detail settings?and among the lowest scores we've seen. Only the Gateway makes a compelling gaming case here, with frame rates in the mid-to-upper 30fps range for both games at the same resolution; its AMD APU comes with a beefier graphics system than the Intel HD Graphics 3000 present on the K53E-RBR4's Core i3-2330M chip.

The 56Wh battery in the K53E-RBR4 is also more or less standard issue, and let the unplugged laptop last 5 hours 4 minutes in our MobileMark 2007 battery-rundown test. This is essentially on par with the Gateway, which stayed up for 4:54, but not even close to the Samsung, which endured for 6:37.

The Asus K53E-RBR4 offers a fair amount of power and punch for its money, though it's not a stellar performer along the lines of the Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL6 (which costs quite a bit more) or Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066AJU (which costs the same). We'd even give a slight edge to the Samsung NP300E5A-A01UB, because of its outstanding battery life and its identical price, or the Gateway NV55S05u because of its gaming prowess and lower cost. There's nothing wrong with the K53E-RBR4, though any of these other systems would help you stretch your dollar further.

This robot is all downhill

By John Roach

Researchers in?Japan have built an aluminum robot powered purely by forward momentum that can walk downhill seemingly forever.

In a test last year, for example, it walked on a slightly inclined treadmill for 13 hours, long enough to set a Guinness World Record. The human-sized pair of legs took 100,000 steps and covered 15 kilometers (9.3 miles).

The robot contains only mechanical components that have been adjusted so that it has the same thigh and leg lengths as a person, and weighs the same, the developers at the Nagoya Institute of Technology's Sano Lab told video news site DigInfo.

The feet look kind of like golf clubs. In fact, the developers said that they plan to apply the principle of the technology to sports equipment.?

Perhaps they should consider building caddies for the Extreme 19th hole at the Legend Golf and Safari Resort in South Africa. After all, walking downhill is hard on the joints, especially when loaded down with a bag of clubs and balls.

Another potential use is as a type of prosthetic device. In this case, demonstrated at the end of the video, the legs are strapped onto a human, helping him take steps.

Robots that walk forever aren't entirely new. Earlier this summer, for example, we featured this robot that walked 40.5 miles non-stop around a track. Only, that robot had a small battery. The downhill walker, by contrast, is a slave to gravity.

More on walking robots:

Perry sidesteps questions about Obama's birthplace (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday declined to say whether he believes President Barack Obama was born in the United States.

At a news conference with state legislators just hours after he'd introduced a major economic plan, the GOP presidential candidate answered questions about the widely debunked claims that Obama wasn't actually American-born.

"I'll cut you off right there," Perry said when asked about Obama's birth certificate. "That is one of the biggest distractions that there is going. We need to be talking about jobs."

But Perry wouldn't answer a reporter's direct question about whether he believed the president was born in the United States. Obama's birth certificate shows he was born in Hawaii.

Speculation about Obama's birthplace ? a way to question his legitimacy to be president ? has swirled among conservatives for years. Business mogul Donald Trump brought it up repeatedly as he considered a bid for president. Earlier this year, Obama held a news conference to release his long-form birth certificate and try to put the issue to rest.

Perry also offered to release his own birth certificate Tuesday. "If somebody wants to see my birth certificate, I'd be happy to show it to them," Perry said. "But the fact is that this is a distraction, and Americans really don't care about that, if you want to know the truth of the matter."

The comments come on the heels of Perry's interview with CNBC and The New York Times, released Tuesday morning, in which he said the birth certificate question was "a good issue to keep alive."

"It's fun to poke him a little bit," Perry said of the president.

Perry's comments are keeping alive an issue that some Republican party elders say is bad for the party.

"Republican candidates should categorically reject the notion that President Obama was not born in the United States," former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush told The Washington Post in an email. "It is a complete distraction from the failed economic policies of the president."

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour also said it was a distraction.

"Look, if this election is about Barack Obama's policies and the results of those policies, Barack Obama's gonna lose," Barbour told reporters in Washington when he was asked about Perry's comments. "Any other issue that gets injected into the campaign is not good for the Republicans."

But to win the nomination, Perry has to appeal to the conservative base of the party ? and talking about Obama's birth certificate could be a way to reach those voters.

Adele Retakes #1 Slot On Billboard

Christian rockers Casting Crowns, R&B singer Joe debut in top 10.
By Gil Kaufman

She may be on vocal rest, but Adele has something to shout about this week, as her unstoppable 21 will once again retake the #1 spot on the Billboard 200.

According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, despite a 5 percent drop in sales last week, the album sold nearly 106,000 copies, helping the British crooner pass the four million mark while never dropping below the #3 spot and notching 13 non-consecutive weeks at #1.

Christian rockers Casting Crowns are just behind at #2 with their latest, Come to the Well, which moved 99,000 copies. It is one of only two debuts in the top 10, which also includes R&B singer Joe's The Good, the Bad, the Sexy (#8, 33,000).

The rest of the top 10 is filled with albums that suffered double-digit sales losses: Scotty McCreery, Clear as Day (#3, 57,000, down 36 percent); Evanescence (#4, 40,000, down 69 percent); Tony Bennett, Duets II (#5, 39,000, down 29 percent); Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV (#6, 35,000, down 22 percent); Lady Antebellum, Own the Night (#7, 34,000, down 27 percent), Five Finger Death Punch, American Capitalist (#9, 29,000, down 68 percent) and Lauren Alaina, Wildflower (#10, 26,000, down 63 percent).

The next-highest debut is by veteran alt rockers Jane's Addiction, whose fourth album, The Great Escape Artist, lands at #12 after moving nearly 24,000 units. Close behind is French electronica act M83, whose Hurry Up, We're Dreaming hits #15 (21,000), and much further down the list, former Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump slips into the top 50 at 47 with his solo debut, Soul Punk (9,000).

On the iTunes albums chart the pre-release sales for Coldplay 's Mylo Xyloto helped catapult that band to #1, ahead of Adele, Casting Crowns, the "Footloose" reboot soundtrack, Evanescence, M83, Foster the People's Torches, Jane's Addiction, the second album from the Tool side project Puscifer and Lil Wayne.

The singles tally is topped by Rihanna's "We Found Love," which beat out LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It," Drake's "Make Me Proud," Adele's "Someone Like You" and Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe." Foster the People are at #5 with "Pumped up Kicks," ahead of Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger," David Guetta's "Without You," Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts" and Coldplay's "Paradise."

Adele will likely have to chill a bit next week when new albums from Kelly Clarkson, Coldplay, Toby Keith and Vince Gill hit the charts.

Roberto Lovato: Occupy Oakland Faces A Troubled Police Department --and Historic Mayor

While President Obama was telling the small crowd at a $7500-a-plate fundraiser in San Francisco that "Change is possible," Pooda Miller was across the bay trying to get her plate back from the Oakland Police Department. "They came, pulled out rifles, shot us up with tear gas and took all our stuff," said Miller, at an afternoon rally condemning the violent evacuation of more than 170 peaceful, unarmed Occupy Oaklanders by 500 heavily-armed members of the Oakland Police Department and other local departments yesterday morning.

With a long metal police fence separating Miller and other members of Occupy Oakland from their confiscated items--tents, water, food, clothes, medicine, plates--and now possessed by the police, Miller grabbed a big blue and white bullhorn that looked like it was almost half of her 4-foot, 5-inch frame. "Give us our stuff back! It don't belong to you!" yelled Miller, who also expressed relief that her baby was not camped out with her that morning.

The sound of Miller's ire shot across the protective masks of all of the officers standing at alert on the other side of the metal police fence, but her loudest, most acidic anger was saved for the baton-wielding officer who, like herself and other officers, was a young African-American woman.

"Who are you serving?" screamed Miller at the top of her high pitched voice, turned raspy from hours of denouncing. "You're being used. You're getting paid with our tax money to put down your own people! Why are you doing this to your own people?"

Miller's questions to the officer about the role of race in the policing of Occupy Oakland points to what is and will continue to be the larger question in Oakland and other U.S. cities where former "minorities" are becoming majorities: What does it mean when those charged with defending elite interests against multi-racial and increasingly non-white activists are themselves multiracial and non-white? The ongoing protests, mayor recall, phone calls, emails and other pressure and pushback of Occupy Oakland are no longer aimed at cigar-smoking white men. They are aimed at a power structure in Oakland whose public face looks more like Miller and other non-white protesters.

Miller and others are calling for the recall of Jean Quan, who made history as Oakland's first Asian-American mayor (full disclosure: Quan's daughter is my Facebook friend); and they are complaining about the use of excessive police violence authorized by Interim Chief Howard Jordan, an African American. Such conflicts between former minorities are becoming the norm in what more conservative commentators call the "post-racial" era ushered in by the election of Obama.

Quan and Jordan are in the throes of dealing with a police department plagued by officer-involved shootings and killings, corruption and other crimes--crimes that have forced a federal consent decree to reform the department, after officers were convicted of planting evidence and beating suspects in West Oakland. Taking her cue from the Obama campaign of 2008, Quan announced Jordan's appointment at a public safety forum titled "Creating Hope in the Community."

Many like Miller and other Occupy Oaklanders are having second thoughts about what feels like the affirmative actioning of policing and state violence. Others, like Ofelia Cuevas of the University of California's Center for New Racial Studies, see the workings of a not-so-21st-century pattern of policing and power.

"Having people of color policing people of color is not new," said Cuevas. "This was part of policing history in California from the beginning. In the 1940s, while the federal government was interning Japanese Americans in camps, officials in Los Angeles were starting to recruit black police officers as a way to decrease police brutality."

Cuevas noted that big city mayors like Quan or Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are, by electoral and structural necessity, required to act like any of their predecessors, who headed up police forces that attacked, surveilled and even killed those perceived as a threat to the establishment. The Bay Area police's violent modern history stretches from OPD's assault on the Black Panther Party--which was founded just blocks from the center of Occupy Oakland, re-named Oscar Grant Plaza--to the killing of Grant, a young black man shot in the back by a transit police officer at a nearby train station.

"Being mayor is being pro-police. They perceive that it's their job to crush what they consider threats to the status quo," said Cuevas.

Regardless of who is Mayor or police chief, keeping the status quo is the last thing that Gaston Lau, a 21 year-old english major at University of California, Berkeley, sees as an option. "[Quan's] support for this amount of police brutality here is ridiculous," said Lau, who held a placard that said "Down, Down with Jean Quan."

"The future power struggles are not just going to be about fights between one race and another," said Lau. "They're mostly going to be about class, which is a big part about what the whole Occupy movement is about."

Lau is hopeful that the movement will inspire younger Asian Pacific Islanders to engage with the issues of the Occupy moment, but worries about the generational conflict such a political engagement entails. "Some older Chinese might see having one of our own as mayor as a source of pride, but we need to help them understand how Quan and police act against us."

Despite the internal and external challenges posed by multicultural powers putting down multicultural movements, Lau is, like his Occupy Oakland peers, undeterred. Clashes between Occupiers and Oakland police continued into last night as protesters tried to reclaim the park and police met them with tear gas. The movement has vowed to continue attempting to return to the space. "Whether or not the mayor is Asian," Lau said, "when she acts against the people, then we will respond as the people."

Rachel Uchitel: Pregnant!!

Rachel Uchitel is pregnant with her first child, according to reports.

Tiger Woods' O.G. mistress just married Matt Hahn in Las Vegas last month. Now they're already starting a family, which she found out in an interesting way.

According to an insider, "She found out she was pregnant when she auditioned for The Amazing Race. They were going to try out to be a couple on the show."

"When she had a drug test, it came back positive - she's pregnant!" At that point, Rachel Uchitel decided to pull out ... ironically, because Matt Hahn did not.

Rachel Uchitel in a BikiniRachel Uchitel and Husband

Matt Hahn has done the unthinkable: Knock up Rachel Uchitel.

A Life & Style source confirms that the two plan to have an even bigger wedding after the baby arrives. Rache, 36, and Matt, 26, live together in San Francisco.

Rachel became a household name after her affair with Tiger Woods was exposed in November 2009. She later appeared on Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew.

She was treated there for "love addiction" and hilariously never mentioned Woods by name, but was still threatened with a lawsuit over her appearance.

Congratulations, mostly, to Uchitel and Hahn on the big news!

Income of top 1 percent far outgrew others: report

Incomes for the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans nearly tripled from 1979 to 2007, far outpacing income growth for all other groups, said a new report that underscored sharply increased U.S. income disparity.

As demonstrators nationwide protest the power of Wall Street and the wealthy, the Congressional Budget Office on Tuesday gave further evidence that, in the last three decades, the United States has become a far more unequal nation.

"For the 1 percent of the population with the highest income, average real after-tax household income grew by 275 percent between 1979 and 2007," said the report from the CBO, a nonpartisan budget and tax analysis arm of Congress.

The next-highest 19 percent of earners saw their income grow by 65 percent over the same period. Income grew by just under 40 percent for the 60 percent of the population in the middle, while the 20 percent at the bottom of the scale saw income growth of only about 18 percent, the report said.

The CBO's conclusions will likely figure in the debate over whether tax increases on the rich should play a role in cutting budget deficits and reducing the U.S. national debt.

"This report confirms what the American people already know," said Representative Sander Levin.

"The rules have been changed by the unfair tax policies of the last decade and our tax code is doing less to level the playing field than it was in the past."

Levin is the top Democrat on the U.S. House of Representatives' tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

As a result of this uneven shift, income was substantially more skewed toward the very top of the income scale in 2007 than it was in 1979, CBO said.

So much so, it said, that in 2005-2007, just before the financial crisis, the top 20 percent of the population received more after-tax income than the entire bottom 80 percent.

CBO said it measured the period between 1979 and 2007 because those years both immediately preceded recessions, making for similar endpoints in the study.

Afghan Taliban says will target national assembly (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? The Afghan Taliban will hunt down and punish anyone who takes part in next month's national assembly, where the possibility of long-term U.S. military bases in Afghanistan will be discussed, the group warned in a statement on Wednesday.

The unusually specific threat, in an English-language message from spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, said participants will be pursued "all over the country and will face severe repercussions."

It called on Taliban supporters "to target every security guard, person with intention, participant and every caller of this convention."

The four-day gathering, known in Afghanistan as a 'Loya Jirga', will be held in the capital Kabul in late November, where it will bring together more than 2,000 politicians, tribal elders, community leaders, businessmen and civil society representatives from across the country.

The assembly will be a consultative process, and its decisions are not legally binding on the government.

Earlier this month, Taliban vowed to fight until all foreign forces have left Afghanistan.

President Hamid Karzai and his Western backers have agreed that all foreign combat troops would return home by the end of 2014, but the West has promised continued support beyond then in the form of funds and training for Afghan security forces.

Despite the presence of tens of thousands of Western soldiers in Afghanistan, the United Nations and other groups say violence is at its worst since U.S.-led Afghan forces toppled the Taliban from power in late 2001.

NATO-led forces say they have seen a decline over recent months in attacks launched by insurgents against their troops.

Safia Sediqi, a spokeswoman for the grand assembly, said she was unaware of the threat.

"I have not read the statement yet and it's early to comment about it," she said.

Guatemalan ex-leader taken under guard to hospital (AP)

GUATEMALA CITY ? A Guatemalan judge ordered that former President Oscar Humberto Mejia Victores be taken to a military hospital on Tuesday for examination to determine if he is fit to face trial on charges of crimes against humanity.

Prosecutors' spokesman Manuel Vasquez says Mejia Victores was under sedation when the judge in the case went to his apartment to conduct an initial hearing.

The former president's lawyers had said he was unable to appear in court because he had suffered a stroke. But when the judge went to his apartment on Tuesday Mejia Victores was also apparently unable to participate in the hearing. He is in his 80s.

Mejia Victores was president of Guatemala from 1983 to 1986, and prior to that he served as an army general and defense minister at the height of the Central American country's 1960-1996 civil war.

He is accused of overseeing a series of massacres in Indian villages suspected of supporting leftist guerrillas.

A U.N.-sponsored truth commission found that 200,000 people were killed in Guatemala's 36-year civil war, 93 percent of them by state forces and paramilitary groups.

It is not the first time the judge handling the genocide case against Mejia Victores and other officials has run into similar situations with the elderly defendants in the case.

Earlier this month, Judge Carol Flores postponed a hearing to decide if a former general, 81-year-old Hector Mario Lopez Fuentes, should stand trial on similar charges.

Prosecutors say Lopez Fuentes brought to a hearing sedated, prompting Flores to cancel it.

She had canceled three previous hearings after Lopez's lawyers said he was too sick with prostate cancer to attend.

Lopez was detained in June on charges that he planned and ordered about 300 massacres when he was chief of staff of the Guatemalan military in 1982 and 1983.

N.Korea's Kim calls for nuclear talks, doubts on uranium (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il told Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang that a moribund 2005 deal should be the basis for fresh talks about Pyongyang's nuclear program, Chinese state media reported, leaving unanswered a key question on uranium enrichment.

The United States and South Korea insist that the North must immediately halt its uranium enrichment program, which it unveiled last year, as a precursor to restart regional talks that offer economic aid in return for denuclearization.

Kim's latest offer of fresh nuclear negotiations came as Washington said it had narrowed differences with North Korea on issues standing in the way of a new round of multilateral nuclear talks.

In his meeting with Li, Kim repeated that North Korea is willing to return to six-party talks -- also involving Russia and Japan -- that it walked out of more than two years ago.

But his published comments did not address Pyongyang's uranium enrichment activities, a key obstacle to talks.

"Kim said the DPRK hopes the six-party talks should be restarted as soon as possible," said the Xinhua news agency report on Tuesday of the meeting between Kim and Li in North Korea on Monday night.

The DPRK is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea -- the North's official name.

"All the six parties should fully implement the September 19 joint statement, signed by them in 2005 in Beijing, on the principle of simultaneous action," Kim said, according to the report.

The North's uranium enrichment program, which opens a second route to make an atomic bomb along with its plutonium program, is not specifically referred to in the 2005 agreement.

However, Seoul and Washington argue uranium enrichment falls under the broader term "existing nuclear programs," which the 2005 deal says must be stopped.

Pyongyang states it is willing to discuss the issue once six-party talks resume, but Seoul and Washington say there will be no talks until uranium enrichment is stopped. They say any halt must be verified by international nuclear inspectors.

The United States, South Korea and their allies have been skeptical of North Korea's recent assertions that it stands ready to return to the six-party talks, saying Pyongyang has reneged on past disarmament pledges.

The talks and the embryonic agreement were a diplomatic trophy for Beijing. But North Korea walked out of the negotiations more than two years ago after the United Nations imposed fresh sanctions for a long-range missile test. The following month Pyongyang conducted a second nuclear test.

The North says its uranium enrichment program is designed to produce power, and argues that the 2005 agreement respects its right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

In Geneva, Stephen Bosworth, the U.S. special representative for North Korea, said the two sides "narrowed some differences but we still have differences that we have to resolve."

Throughout the regional turbulence, Beijing has stood by its ally, North Korea, which it sees as a buffer against the influence of the United States and its allies. But China has also tried to preserve ties with South Korea, and to revive the stalled talks on North Korean nuclear disarmament.

Li, 56, is the favorite to become premier from early 2013, when Wen Jiabao will step down. He will visit South Korea after his trip to the North.

Super-Soft Money

In this election cycle, ?superPACs? will likely replace political parties as a conduit for large, often secret contributions, allowing an end run around the $2,400 individual contribution limit and the bar on corporate and labor contributions to federal candidates. To understand how we got into this predicament, we need to go back briefly to the 1970s. In the wake of Watergate and other money-in-politics scandals, Congress imposed tough new campaign finance restrictions. Not only did the law limit contributions to federal candidates to $1,000 per person (an amount it eventually raised to $2,000 and indexed to inflation), it also limited independent spending?that is, no one person or group could spend more than that amount?to $1,000. In a Solomonic 1976 decision, the Supreme Court in Buckley v. Valeo split the baby, upholding the contribution limits but striking down the independent spending limit as a violation of the First Amendment protections of free speech and association.

Obama welcomes post-Gaddafi era in Libya (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama welcomed the declaration of liberation by Libya's new leaders Sunday and urged the transition government to respect human rights and work toward democracy after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.

"After four decades of brutal dictatorship and eight months of deadly conflict, the Libyan people can now celebrate their freedom and the beginning of a new era of promise," Obama said in a written statement.

With the fighting over, Obama said Libya's Transitional National Council should turn its focus toward elections.

Obama has touted Gaddafi's death Thursday as the beginning of a new time for Libyans and as vindication of a cautious strategy in which the United States backed a NATO air campaign to help rebels but steered clear of a lead role.

Obama had been criticized by Republicans at home for what has been described as a "leading from behind" strategy.

Libya's new rulers, he said, should "continue living up to their commitments to respect human rights, begin a national reconciliation process, secure weapons and dangerous materials, and bring together armed groups under a unified civilian leadership."

The United States would cooperate with its international allies to "help advance a stable, democratic transition," Obama said.

Review: I-Wayne brings 'Life Teachings' on new CD (AP)

?I-Wayne, "Life Teachings" (VP Records)

"Life Teachings" is the long overdue third album from reggae star I-Wayne, and the singer is back with a display of real roots, continuing to mix the political with the romantic.

The 14-track album, mostly produced by Patrick Z. Henry, takes you on a journey of love and righteousness, and is filled with rhythms and bass lines that blend perfectly with his incredible voice.?

Album opener "Burn Down Sodom" is bold and self-explanatory, and the powerful title track touches on common roots matters such as taking down Babylon, and "Herb Fi Legalize" does the same praising marijuana.

In comparison, tracks such as "Life Joy," a collaboration with Etana, gives the record an element of R&B, and "Empress Divine" adores the "perfect woman," showcasing I-Wayne's romantic side.

The album wouldn't be complete without an infusion of dancehall and that comes courtesy of "The Fire Song," featuring special guest Assassin, whose rough tone compliments I-Wayne's softness.

Overall, "Life Teachings" is one of the better contemporary reggae albums to be heard in a while, and out of his trio of records, this one is by far the strongest, with its fearless songwriting and neat production. Comparisons to reggae greats are certain, but not premature. Old and new listeners alike should be excited.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: An instant pick on this classic is "Pure as the Nile" ? a simple, feel good song with a powerful captivating vibe.

(AP) ? He introduced wartime Britain to the percussive rhythm of the rumba, so capturing the nation's imagination that its young princess chose his songs for her public dancing debut.

Bandleader Edmundo Ros, 100, died peacefully in his sleep, his family said Saturday.

Born in Trinidad to a Venezuelan mother and a Scottish father, Ros's musical career began in the Venezuelan army but took off after he moved to London in 1937. His five-piece Rumba Band was a runaway hit, playing for high society and international royalty.

His music was so popular that then-Princess Elizabeth had her first public dance to the sound of Ros' band in the 1940s. As queen, she would award him the Order of the British Empire for his services to entertainment.

Ros was effectively London's "ambassador for Latin American music," his son Douglas told The Associated Press.

Ros was a prolific artist, making more than 800 recordings over the course of his career. His 1949 number, "The Wedding Samba," sold 3 million copies.

His band was a fixture at Regent Street's Coconut Grove club, which he bought in 1951 and which counted Britain's Princess Margaret, Monaco's Prince Rainier and Sweden's Prince Bertil among its regulars, according to the musician's website.

The club's demanding standards ? ladies wearing broad-brimmed hats or trousers were denied admittance ? kept the clientele exclusive through the 1950s, but the relaxation of Britain's gambling laws in the 1960s began to hit his takings.

Ros sold the club and later retired to the Spanish resort city of Alicante, where he died on Friday night, according to a family statement.

Douglas Ros said a private funeral ceremony would take place in Spain.

EU, Russia clinch deal on WTO

(AP) ? The European Union and Moscow on Friday announced a major breakthrough in negotiations to let Russia become a member of the World Trade Organization by the end of the year.

The last bilateral issues with Russia were resolved over the car industry, the export of EU farm products and quotas for wood imports, EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said.

Russia is the last major economy that isn't a member of the WTO, the international free-trade body, and accession to it is crucial to a broader partnership agreement the European Union wants to establish with the country.

"We have struck a deal on the final outstanding bilateral issues, leaving the way open for Russia to join the WTO by the end of this year," De Gucht said.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with three major radio stations that "all the issues related to Russia's bid to join the WTO have been settled."

De Gucht insisted that Russia still needed to overcome a dispute with neighbor Georgia over trade transparency and offered to mediate. Georgia has the power to block Russia's membership, which has been in the works since 1993, and has been virtually doing so over border control issues in breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Lavrov said that "the issues that Georgia is raising have nothing to do with the WTO," adding that "if we are guided by the WTO's charter, then Georgia is not an obstacle" to Russia's accession."

De Gucht said Russia would now continue negotiating with the WTO at its Geneva headquarters to deal with remaining multilateral trade issues and held out hope Moscow could still join the trade organization in December.

Russian membership would make it easier for two-way trade and improve the overall business climate.

In the past, for example, Russia's high export duties on wood have hit Nordic paper makers hard, and royalties airlines have to pay when they fly over Siberia have been a major concern. Both issues have now been settled, De Gucht said.

The EU is Russia's largest trading partner, accounting for 46 percent of its foreign trade. The 27-country bloc is also the biggest investor in the Russian economy.

Scientists determine family tree for most-endangered bird family in the world

Friday, October 21, 2011

Using one of the largest DNA data sets for a group of birds and employing next-generation sequencing methods, Smithsonian scientists and collaborators have determined the evolutionary family tree for one of the most strikingly diverse and endangered bird families in the world, the Hawaiian honeycreepers.

Not only have the researchers determined the types of finches that the honeycreeper family originally evolved from, but they have also linked the timing of that rapid evolution to the formation of the four main Hawaiian Islands.

"There were once more than 55 species of these colorful songbirds, and they are so diverse that historically it wasn't even entirely clear that they were all part of the same group," said Heather Lerner, who was a postdoctoral researcher at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute's Center for Conservation and Evolutionary Genetics when she conducted this research, and is currently an assistant professor of biology at Earlham College and Joseph Moore Museum director.

"Some eat seeds, some eat fruit, some eat snails, some eat nectar. Some have the bills of parrots, others of warblers, while some are finch-like and others have straight, thin bills. So the question that we started with was how did this incredible diversity evolve over time," Lerner said.

The answer is unique to the Hawaiian Islands, which are part of a conveyor belt of island formation, with new islands popping up as the conveyor belt moves northwest. Each island that forms represents a blank slate for evolution, so as one honeycreeper species moves from one island to a new island, those birds encounter new habitat and ecological niches that may force them to adapt and branch off into distinct species.

The researchers looked at the evolution of the Hawaiian honeycreepers after the formation of Kauai-Niihau, Oahu, Maui-Nui and Hawaii. The largest burst of evolution into new species, called a radiation, occurred between 4 million and 2.5 million years ago, after Kauai-Niihau and Oahu formed but before the remaining two large islands existed, and resulted in the evolution of six of 10 distinct groups of species characterized by different sizes, shapes and colors.

"This radiation is one of the natural scientific treasures that the archipelago offers out in the middle of the Pacific," said Helen James, a research zoologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and a co-author of the paper. "It was fascinating to be able to tie a biological system to geological formation and allowed us to become the first to offer a full picture of these birds' adaptive history."

James' previous work on Hawaiian birds' morphology, the branch of biology that deals with form and structure of organisms, played a pivotal role in determining which avian species to survey to determine the closest living relatives of the Hawaiian honeycreepers.

Using genetic data from 28 bird species that seemed similar to the honeycreepers morphologically, genetically or that shared geographic proximity, the paper's authors determined that the various honeycreeper species evolved from Eurasian rosefinches. Unlike most other ancestral bird species that came from North America and colonized the Hawaiian Islands, the rosefinch likely came from Asia, the scientists found.

"There is a perception that there are no species remaining that are actually native to Hawaii, but these are truly native birds that are scientifically valuable and play an important and unique ecological function," said Rob Fleischer, head of SCBI's Center for Conservation and Evolutionary Genetics and a co-author of the paper.

Fleischer has been studying the genetics, evolution and conservation of these birds for more than 25 years. "I'm thrilled that we finally had enough DNA sequence and the necessary technology to become the first to produce this accurate and reliable evolutionary tree."

The diversity of Hawaiian honeycreepers has taken a huge hit, with more than half of the known 56 species already extinct. The paper's researchers focused on the 19?now 18?species that have not gone extinct, but of those, six are considered critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, four are considered endangered and five are vulnerable.

The next, ongoing step in the research is to use museum specimens and subfossil bones to determine where the extinct species fit into the evolutionary family tree, or phylogeny, to see if the new lineages fit into the overall pattern found in this study.

To analyze the DNA for the study that came out this week, the researchers used specialized next generation sequencing protocols developed by Michi Hofreiter's group at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. To look at ancient DNA that is by nature damaged or degraded, they are using additional innovative techniques to capture the DNA and come up with a sufficiently informative dataset.
