Authors of a newly published journal supplement explore the state of nutrition science on white vegetables, especially potatoes, in supporting a healthy, well-balanced diet

(McLean, VA) May 15, 2013 Potatoes and other white vegetables are just as important to a healthy diet as their colorful cousins in the produce aisle, according to the authors of a scientific supplement published yesterday in the peer-reviewed journal, Advances in Nutrition. Although green, red and orange veggies are often promoted as top nutrient sources, white vegetables are nutrient powerhouses in their own right and deserve a place on your plate.

"It's recommended that the variety of fruits and vegetables consumed daily should include dark green and orange vegetables, but no such recommendation exists for white vegetables, even though they are rich in fiber, potassium and magnesium," says the supplement's editor Connie Weaver, PhD, distinguished professor of nutrition science at Purdue University. "Overall, Americans are not eating enough vegetables, and promoting white vegetables, some of which are common and affordable, may be a pathway to increasing vegetable consumption in general."

The Advances in Nutrition supplement, "White Vegetables: A Forgotten Source of Nutrients," published by the American Society for Nutrition, features an executive summary and nine papers by leading nutrition scientists that explore the state of the science on white vegetables in supporting a healthy diet.

The supplement authors identify a substantial body of evidence that demonstrates how the inclusion of white vegetables, such as potatoes, can increase intake of shortfall nutrients, notably fiber, potassium and magnesium, as well as help increase overall vegetable consumption among children, teens and adults in the U.S. In addition, the papers detail the current and emerging science about key health benefits associated with consumption of potatoes and other white vegetables such as cauliflower, onions, mushrooms, turnips and kohlrabi. Some key findings are:

  • Color does not necessarily predict nutritive value of a vegetable. In fact, white vegetables, including nutrient-dense potatoes, contribute important amounts of essential shortfall nutrients to the American diet across all age groups.
  • Vegetable intake, including consumption of starchy vegetables like potatoes, is about half of what is recommended by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
  • Improvements in cooking oils, coatings, preparation methods and processing technologies are enhancing the nutritional profile of the white potato in all forms, making an already healthy package even healthier.

The journal supplement is the outcome of a June 2012 Purdue University roundtable on white vegetable nutrition. The forum was supported by an unrestricted grant by the Alliance for Potato Research and Education, a non-for-profit organization dedicated to expanding and translating the latest scientific research and information on potato nutrition, consumption and affordability.

New Orleans Mother?s Day parade shooting: Police seek man seen in surveillance footage

Police in New Orleans have released surveillance footage of one of at least three suspects wanted in connection with the afternoon shooting that injured 19 people at a Mother's Day parade.

In the footage, posted to YouTube, a man wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants can be seen standing on the side of a street in the city's 7th Ward. The man appears to open fire on the crowd, which scatters, and the man flees.

Police believe shots were fired from different guns, and three people were seen by officers running away from the scene in the 1400 block of Frenchmen Street at North Villere. One "was seen running on Frenchmen towards North Claiborne then unknown," the New Orleans Police Department?s Public Information Office said in a release. That man was described as "an African-American male approximately 18 to 22 years-old wearing a white T shirt and blue jean shorts."

Police say most of the victims?10 men, seven women, a 10-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl?were only grazed by gunfire, but three of them arrived at the hospital in critical condition and underwent immediate surgery, according to NOLA.com. The 10-year-olds "had graze wounds to the body and are in good condition," police said.

A separate, choppy video posted to the social video sharing app Vine appears to capture the moment shots were fired.

New Orleans Police and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to "the arrest and indictment of the person(s) responsible for this crime."

Police also warned that anyone withholding information or helping "harbor, conceal, or aid the offender, knowing or having reasonable ground to believe that he has committed the felony, and with the intent that he may avoid or escape from arrest, trial, conviction, or punishment" could be charged as an accessory.

The annual parade was attended by about 400 people led by a contingent of police officers.

"The specialness of the day doesn't appear to interrupt the relentless drumbeat of violence," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said at a news conference late Sunday outside a hospital where the victims were being treated. "These kinds of incidents are not going to go unanswered. We're going to be very, very aggressive. There were hundreds of people out there today. So somebody knows who did this, and the way we're going to stop the violence together in this city is everybody come together."

New Orleans has a history of street violence, and federal officials say there is no indication the shooting was an act of terrorism.

"It's strictly an act of street violence in New Orleans," Mary Beth Romig, a spokeswoman for FBI New Orleans, told the Associated Press.

"All innocent bystanders got hit," Shannon Roberts?who said her nephew, niece and cousin were each shot?told NOLA.com from a hospital waiting room. "The city needs to stop the violence. It's hurting our families."

>> they had it period of gusty winds up to around 40 miles per hour crossing over the lake for a long period. that would create large waves, these waves have the melting i'd still on it. that's why the waves came on shore, some records said it just sounded like cracking glass outside now the windsing are easing, and the waves aren't as much of as issue.

>>> a bizarre situation, used to it out that way, and temperatures actually will still be on the cool side, where the cool air is working back in. 48 degrees right

NY man finishes writing out entire Bible by hand

SPENCERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) ? At last, it is written.

Four years after he began his project to write out every word of the Bible, Phillip Patterson penned the very last lines Saturday at an upstate New York church.

"Every single curly-q, every single loop, it was all worth it," said Patterson, 63, moments after inking the final two verses of the King James Bible. "I'm really going to miss this writing."

It took Patterson just a few minutes to copy the final lines of the Book of Revelation before a crowd of about 125 people at St. Peter's Presbyterian Church in Spencertown. He ended the ceremony by saying "Amen."

Patterson, of Philmont, began copying the complete King James Bible in his neat, looping handwriting in 2009. He spent two years copying the first five books of the Bible as a prototype before starting fresh. He said he'll spend about another year working on the book's binding and covers before donating the fully completed Bible ? more than 2,400 pages ? to St. Peter's as a gift.

For now, he said, he'll just have to get used to his new life without holding a Pigma Micron pen every day.

"I'm going to miss the writing, that's what I'm going to miss," he said. "My fingers are fine, no callouses."

Patterson has said he started the project to learn about the Bible, not as a spiritual quest. But he said the project has helped him become more patient, confident and loving.

The project was slowed by his health problems, including AIDS and anemia. The retired interior designer relies on two canes and leans on walls and furniture to get around his apartment near the Massachusetts border.

Paterson worked as much as 14 hours a day on his project.
