Minimizing the Cost of Exotic Family Holidays | Travel and Tours ...

There are thousands of reasons why parents all over the UK choose to take their family holidays close to home, though it has to be said that one of the biggest deciding factors of all is of course price. After all, it seems perfectly logical that taking the kids on a fortnight-break to the Costa del Sol will work out vastly cheaper than the most elite holidays in Mauritius all inclusive specialists are peddling, for reasons that seem plainly obvious.

However, the latter of the two will more often than not be entirely overlooked by most and thus never realistically considered or looked into. In reality, there?s every opportunity to make a far-flung holiday just as, if not more affordable than the usual annual haunts within a couple of hours from the UK.

Consider the following next time around and see just how far your budget could take you:

Destinations

Let it never be forgotten that the lion?s share of expenses on a family holiday usually comes by way of spending during the course of the stay ? not the flights and accommodation. As such, factor in the lower costs of living a far-flung exotic destination offers and it could well prove that the extra expense needed to get there in the first place quite simply pales in comparison. True, there are some holidays in Antigua that would necessitate a King?s ransom to survive, but this doesn?t mean there aren?t incredible bargains out there too.

All-inclusive

Furthering the above point ? all-inclusive family holiday to distant lands seem exotic and frivolous, but considering the fact that all essential expenses have already been met in the initial outlay, they can turn out to be some of the most appealing bargains of all. As such, never overlook the all-inclusive option as a possibility and speak to a specialist to find out what?s on offer.

Time of Year

Assuming that the time of year to travel will be restricted to school holidays, the best times to look into traveling to places like the Caribbean are the late spring and early autumn holidays ? both of which are exponentially less expensive than the summer and Christmas periods. Take into account any severe weather warnings of course, but most of the year is wide open to choose from.

Reverse Roles

If looking to stick to a budget whereby not a penny more can be invested, speak to an independent travel consultancy that promises to take what you have to give and transform it into the most luxurious holiday possible ? as opposed to YOU struggling to meet their fixed-prices. The real beauty of this is the flexibility they will no doubt offer, plus they?ll probably bring to light a world of resorts and destinations most would otherwise never have heard of.

Family-Friendly

Last but not least, insist on booking with a provider where deals for families with younger children come as standard across the board. There are so many leading providers on the market offering free travel for kids or vastly reduced costs that there is no excuse for any other service refusing to offer the same. Factor the kids? travel bills out of the equation and the world suddenly open up like never before.

92% Amour

All Critics (140) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (129) | Rotten (11)

As remarkable as Haneke's films are, not a one has been as transcendently generous as Amour, which is nominated for five Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best foreign-language film.

"Amour" isn't just a great movie, it's a movie that may actually do you some good.

Shot in long, static takes, Amour stares directly into the indignities of old age and the curse of a slow death.

Each actor draws on a lifetime's worth of experience, performing with grace and rare, uncompromising realism.

There's nowhere to hide: The film cuts no corners and stings with the authenticity of life's fragility.

This is beautiful film, and a terrible one: devastating to stick out, and yet one of the most remarkable romances ever made...

One of the ten best films of 2012.

Amour may not inspire the kind of emotional epiphany that similar illness-driven dramas tend to, the results are still riveting.

Death is part of love's bargain, and Haneke lays this fact bare.

It is hard to recommend Amour. Austrian director Michael Haneke's film cannot justly be described as entertaining, and it will likely leave you sad and weary. But it is a film you must see.

"Amour" isn't easy to watch, but its rewards are many.

"Amour" isn't a fun time out at the movies, and I kind of doubt I'll ever see it again. But it's an amazingly act, absolutely heartbreaking film.

A viewer may want to watch Amour, because it is a work of art.

A bitter, pitiless piece of work. We can admire its components, but we're repulsed by its vision.

Haneke's self-indulgent approach is getting old to me. His devoted fans will like it, but others will most likely be scratching their heads trying to figure out how this got a Best Picture nomination.

It's upsetting material lined with lead by Haneke, who searches for the meaning of love but can't help but dwell on the details of decay.

Amour is as heartbreaking and real as it gets.

Humane Society International and Costa Rican ... - Costa Rica News

SAN JOS?, Costa Rica (Oct. 22, 2012) ?Humane Society International- Latin America and the Servicio Nacional de Salud Animal (SENASA), the Costa Rican animal health service, celebrated the signing of an agreement to join together to work for improved animal welfare standards.

?In recent years, SENASA has become increasingly involved in the fight against dogfighting, an activity which oftentimes involves the sale of drugs and the arms possession. Its latest raid resulted in the seizure of 23 dogs, with two American Pit Bull Terriers that come from bloodlines associated with international dogfighting operations. The agreement aims to formalize and strengthen the collaboration between SENASA and Humane Society International, which will be implemented through awareness campaigns and training with international experts on topics such as responsible pet ownership, animal cruelty report management and welfare of production animals,? said German Rojas, director of SENASA.

?Our collaboration with SENASA will allow us to more effectively work with Costa Rican authorities to crack down on animal fighting and promote animal welfare in general,? said Cynthia Dent, regional director for HSI-Latin America. ?Humane Society International is very excited about this groundbreaking partnership.?

Following the official signing, HSI and SENASA held their first joint training session with personnel from SENASA and law enforcement receiving training to adequately deal with cockfighting and dogfighting, including investigating and breaking up animal fighting operations.

Animal welfare is a global issue, and one of increasing relevance in developing countries, where governmental institutions and NGO?s are key players. It is because of this that SENASA is entering this partnership with HSI, an international organization with over 50 years of experience in the field of animal welfare. This collaboration can become the cornerstone of a new era of improved animal health, welfare and public veterinary health.

Google Talks Holiday Shopping Trends Businesses Need To Be ...

Consumers intend to spend more on holiday shopping this year than they did last year, according to new research from Google.

Do you expect to see better holiday sales than last year? Let us know in the comments.

?We expect this to be the first Nonline shopping season,? a Google spokesperson tells WebProNews. ?Meaning that the line between offline and online shopping has truly become blurred for users. They don?t see a line between their online and offline experiences, and neither do smart retailers.?

To perform its study, Google commissioned Ipsos OTX, and independent market research firm. Interviews were conducted via online survey from 8/29 ? 8/27, with a total sample of 1,500 consumers.

?Not only is this the first Nonline holiday season, but it?s an important one for retailers as consumers prepare to spend more money ? and spend more time making sure they get the most value for every dollar spent,? says Google Retail Industry Director, Todd Pollak. ?Our research released today with Ipsos shows that on average, shoppers plan to spend $900 on holiday shopping this year, up slightly from an average of $854 last year. Along with this bump in spending, we?re seeing an increase in research before purchasing by shoppers who are more judicious about their purchases- 46% plan to spend more time shopping around for gifts this year.?

?We found that 80% of shoppers will research online before making a purchase this season, and they switch devices to suit their needs,? he adds. ?For example, 51% of shoppers will research online and then visit the store to purchase, while 17% will visit a store first and then purchase online. Another 32% will research online, visit store to view a product, then return online to purchase. In short, the shopper?s journey looks less like a funnel and more like a flight map, and the lines between online and offline shopping experiences are blurring.?

Nonline shopping

According to the company?s research, consumers are most excited about purchasing clothes, TVs, laptops and tablets (namely, iPads, though tablets in general aren?t too far behind), though they intend to shop across all major retail categories, of course. 83% intend to purchase apparel, 64% intend to purchase toys, 57% intend to purchase electronics, 56% intend to purchase watches & jewelry, 49% intend to purchase cosmetics/beauty products, and 35% intend to purchase sporting goods.

Here?s what tablet and e-reader purchase intent looks like:

Tablets and eReaders

Interestingly, latptop intent is still greater than tablet intent (though not by much).

Google says its key takeaways from the study are:

  • Capture Consumer Demand: 54% of consumers will start holiday shopping before Black Friday
  • Make Sure Your Brand is Top of Mind: 46% of consumers plan to spend more time shopping around for gifts this year because of the economy
  • Open Attribution Window: While consumers are researching early, 31% plan to do the majority of their holiday shopping in early/mid December
  • Capture undecided holiday shoppers with search: 37% of consumers say search is their go-to source for gift ideas, and 51% plan to research online but buy in-store
  • Implement full coverage for mobile and tablet: 4 in 5 mobile/tablet owners will use their device for holiday shopping, and mobile users continue searching after Christmas
Starting Holiday Shopping

We had a discussion with Director of Product Management for Google Shopping, Vineet Buch, who talked about how people are using their mobile devices in physical stores more and more. Depending on the kind of store or product, he says, people rely on humans for expertise and information, but in these types of scenarios, mobile apps can give a lot more info about a product than a human. He gave the examples of shopping for a washing machine or a microwave.

In cases where customers are more likely to make a taste-based purchase, Buch says mobile apps can empower the sales clerks to provide higher quality services. As far as straight information goes, however, we can probably expect consumers to turn to their mobile devices in-store before turning to sales clerks in increasing numbers.

According to Google?s findings, 85% of people shop for a gift on one device and then make their purchase on another. To do so, Google says, 45% will leave an item in the virtual shopping cart, 45% will send themselves an email or link, and 32% will conduct a new search on a new device.

?Savvy retailers are stimulating demand on one device and completing a sale on another,? says Pollak. ?Shopping searches spike on mobile devices on days when people are on the go ? out at a Thanksgiving dinner or hunting bargains at the mall. The biggest days for holiday shopping searches on mobile devices last year were Thanksgiving, Black Friday, the day after Christmas, and the weekends in December.?

Shopping Companions

According to Google, 62% of shoppers used a smartphone in a store to help with shopping research last year, indicating that retailers should aim to inform in-store purchase decisions with mobile apps or sites that are optimized for mobile.

Buch says that, as far as online goes, video is becoming increasingly powerful in many categories, as far as discovery. For reviews, he says, videos are better than words, because you can see the angles of products, how the move, etc.

?The user is becoming better informed and smarter,? he says, adding that this is an opportunity for those retailers who can better connect with users.

Mobile, he says, is another big opportunity, not just because you can drive conversions, but so many people come to retailers through mobile. The key is not to have a disconnect between your mobile experience and your desktop web experience as a retailer. Consumers should get a familiar experience no matter what screen they?re on.

?Mobile is kind of like the early days of the desktop Internet in some sense,? Buch says. ?Tons of traffic, relatively easy to understand but not so may people savvy enough to leverage it properly.?

Users, he says, are demanding reliability and performance, and that needs to be reflected no matter what screen they?re using to access your site.

?The same way Google tries to have a seamless experience, merchants who are able to make that happen will do much better than those who have a disconnect,? he says.

Price has historically been a major driver of purchases online, he says, but having faith in the experience is becoming really important as well, he says, noting that stores with Google?s Trusted Stores badge get mich higher clickthroughs than stores without.

Much has been made about the importance of social to shopping, and Buch shared some thoughts on that as well. ?People have gone back and forth,? he says. ?People were putting products into news feeds or their Google+ feeds?that?s not the way social shopping is panning out.?

?It?s not so much about your personal friends, as opinions you trust,? he says. ?Even if they?re not personal acquaintances of yours.?

In other words, you don?t necessarily need your actual friends on Google+ to gain social shopping value from the Google+ community. If you Circle people whose opinions matter to you, it?s possible that these opinions will come out as needed. Google, of course, is already adding Google+ associations to search results, and continues to find new integrations of these social connections all the time.

?It used to be that shoppers and merchants formed connections offline ? a salesperson could spark a conversation with a shopper in the store,? says Pollak. ?Now these connections are happening both online and offline. With YouTube and social networks, people are sharing their opinion on products not just with a group of friends, but with millions of people. Retailers are advertising against terms like ?reviews? and ?haul videos? to promote their message. And for good reason ? we found that 13% of shoppers plan to watch online videos to help with shopping research, and 48% will use tablets to read product reviews before purchasing.?

Is your business ready for the mad holiday season rush? How important is the mobile shopping experience to your customers? Share your thoughts in the comments.

NBA News Round-Up: Lakers Injuries, Heat Roster Moves, Gangnam Style, Betty White and More

Hello and welcome to another day of Bullet Passes. We have an event-filled day for you here, starting with the final emergence of Dwight Howard. Howard played in his first game as a Laker last night and made his presence very well-known right off the bat. Howard's first points as a Laker? An alley-oop from Pau Gasol. It announced the big man?s arrival to LA in his typical boisterous fashion.

I honestly thought Howard wouldn't return until at least mid-December. The fact that he is ready to go at the beginning of the season has me elated as it should the rest of the NBA. Not just because it's the Lakers, but because we get to see a team be its greatest from the outset. We get to see what they really are made of from beginning to end. This team has the chance to be historical, along with the Miami Heat, and that makes me salivate at the prospect of this season.

Howard is already giving NBA fans a glimpse of what he is capable of with the Lakers and he has only spent 33 minutes on the court. His 19 points have brought a phenomenal amount of expectation and excitement to the league and I for one cannot wait to see how this season plays out.

And now for the Passes.

*Not everything was roses in Los Angeles last night as the team ended the night with two injury scares to two starters. Steve Nash sprained his ankle early in the fourth on a collision with Isaiah Thomas but managed to return to the game while Metta World Peace dislocated his right middle finger in the same quarter. Both players look to be fine and should play in the next preseason game.

*If you didn?t read our site earlier today, you probably missed the news that Amar?e Stoudemire will miss the next 2-3 weeks due to a ruptured cyst in his knee. It's sad to see such a great player struggle the past few years with injuries and underperform when they reached such great heights before. Even sadder is the fact that you are not reading our site and I am linking to our own news because you are too lazy to click an extra button or two. Sad!

* Speaking of sad, it appears Stephen Curry aka Mr. Glass is at it again in Golden State. And by at it again, I mean his ankle is sprained for like the 500th time in his career. Seriously, the kid sprains his ankle so much it should be one of his stat categories.

*The Miami Heat waived center Mickell Gladness and forward Robert Dozier. Only reason I'm bringing this news to you is because both men have awesome last names and I kind of wish they were mine.

*OK, I feel like those last few Bullets were ultra-depressing, so let?s get a little bit happy. Since Gangnam Style has taken over the country, it's not hard to find a bunch of different people spoofing it. What you probably never expected to see was 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert doing the dance in the middle of an Indiana mall. But that is exactly what the big man did this past week. Gotta give the dude credit, he does a pretty good job of it.? And to think I nicknamed him Tall For Nothing back in his Georgetown days.

*Better get used to the thought of seeing Betty White?s face on Deron Williams? arm. No, the two are not dating, but the Brooklyn Nets star will be getting a tattoo of the Golden Girl on his arm for a deal he made with a charity. Comedy Central's Night of Too Many Stars was raising money for Autism on Saturday night, where Williams made a deal that if they raised $100,000, he would get a tattoo of their choosing. Betty White was the choice. Yes, it's only temporary, but still pretty cool, even for a guy that uses a Sharpie to draw in his hair.

*In other funny news ... wait ... sorry, I read the headline and it said ?Kings? and ?versatile? so I just assumed. In all seriousness, though, James Ham of Cowbell Kingdom thinks the Kings have a versatile team and it will be good enough to challenge all opponents this year. And once you read his reasoning, you will probably think the same too.

*Chalk up another NBA conspiracy theory. Apparently, Jeff Van Gundy thinks there was a conspiracy between the NBA and ESPN to not hire his brother Stan who was fired in May by the Orlando Magic. Yup, that's the reason. Or maybe they just realized he had a face for radio and a voice for Smashing Pumpkins songs. Either way, enjoy the conspiracy.

*There's no conspiracies down in Charlotte, just a lot of blood, sweat, guts and dunk contests going on at practice as RufusonFire.com?s Ben Swanson gives you some of his observations from this past week.

*With Dwight Howard gone and Coach Van Gundy fired, it seems the Orlando Magic have little to work with this year as they start their rebuilding process. Even worse, they have a bit of a problem with the culture within the organization as well as with the fans. It's not hard to see why after what has happened the last two years as well as this being the second time LA has taken one of their star attractions. So how do you rebuild from that? Well, Evan Dunlap of SBNation?s Orlando Pinstriped Post thinks the rebuilding starts by rebuilding the culture and not with stars and winning games. He might just be onto something. Now if only he were in Charlotte.

And that's it for today, my friends. Of course, we will be back tomorrow and raring to go but until then, have a good one.
