Continuing from the last post, Father John Powell was one of my early mentors although I never met him. He is retired now but still very active. His books?especially Why Am I Afraid to Love?helped me to accept that I had the opportunity to begin a new life by letting go of old concepts.

By the time we are 21, it is estimated that we each have retained 20,000 hours of negative self-talk. Father Powell?s books are easy to read and loaded with dynamic self-help concepts. These were some of the first in this field. His books are available at faithalivebooks.The huge concept that I learned from him was the Copernican concept that the world didn?t revolve around me. It was my first step toward living life on life?s terms. In the movie ?10 Million Ways to Die?, the hero (Jeff Bridges?one of my all-time favorites) is at the beach after his slip for his 6-month chip. In his acceptance, he says that he never knew that he lived in a world that he hadn?t created. I identified.

I was also slowly learning that although addiction has some common roots for everyone, we each had to wrestle our own demons. So recovery becomes as unique as we each are. The only being large enough to know what we each need is God. The most beautiful gift that we each receive in recovery is that every experience and trial that we have had is a tool to help others with his/her recovery.

The fear we experienced as children created frozen feelings in our adulthood. But in accepting ourselves, we need to remember that that fear protected us when we were small and had no clue how to respond in the world of adults who also were struggling with life plus addiction. So our fears are our protection that we no longer need. Letting go and letting God works much better for my life.

As the main addiction recovery program progresses, other addiction problems will surface. I believe that everyone needs to examine the codependent side of the addiction experience. Over the 28+ years I have been in recovery, I have seen hundreds of relationships between sponsor and addict. Many of these relationships could be enriched by delving into an understanding of the codependent dynamics in this very special relationship. I see no reason why the examining of these dynamics couldn?t be shared by the two.

One of the main codependent relationship choices is the top-dog or underdog positions in power. I was the top-dog?the one who always ran things and had all the answers for everyone else. The ?top-dog? is a natural magnet for all those who don?t want to be responsible for him/her. Of course, I attracted under-dogs who ?needed? me for everything and who generally weren?t around when I had needs. I now know that this is an under-dog game because they get everything done for them.

Not surprisingly, many codependents end up in the helping professions?policemen, fire departments, social services, teachers, clergy and medical professions. For people seeking help from therapists, be careful not to accept a professional who has your answers. No one can know what is best for anyone else. Choose professionals that offer a free session in which you can explore the helper?s own recovery. A healer can only help you as far as he/she has healed.

Early in recovery, books help much because they can be referred to time and time again. I am including some of the books that helped me. The main criteria I used in choosing what helped me was that the book had to be easy to understand. I believe wisdom is simple.

Update (July 2012) All of these 3 posts about my recovery were written before 2009. In June, 2009, I reached my emotional bottom after being in recovery since Nov. 1976. The book that eventually allowed me to accept my primary addiction (having been born into a home dominated by alcohol) was the Red Book of ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics).

According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), published in U.S. News & World Report in March 2012, there is a great demand for psychiatrists as the 50,000 current practitioners in the United States are too few to serve patients, particularly in rural and hard to reach areas. Education-Portal.com also reported that the U.S. Bureau of Health Professions noted that the insufficient number of 7,000 child psychiatrists practicing in 2009 was unevenly distributed across the country, leaving many rural areas underserved and that 12,623 psychiatrists, instead of the expected 8,312, would be needed by 2020. With healthcare industries expected to expand back in 2009, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected, then, better than average growth for physicians and surgeons over ten years from 2008-2018.

In addition to demand, CNN also featured psychiatrists as one of 20 highest-paying jobs in 2011, with the median pay for an established psychiatrist at $185,000 a year and the top pay reaching to $269,000 annually.

Choosing the perfect Psychiatry School should not be solely focused on the ranking of the school, rather, consideration must be focused on the program of choice and the strength of the specialty programs of a university. In addition, facilities must also be taken into account, as programs in psychiatry are usually affiliated with particular hospitals or medical clinics, where the students will get most of their training. Factors to consider in the evaluation of the medical facility include the number of doctors and nurses on staff, the number of inpatient admissions, outpatient visits and the psychiatric patients who are treated at the facility. And as an extra, students may also want to consider programs that will help them to meet eligibility requirements for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Advance in X-ray imaging shines light on nanomaterials

ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2012) ? A new advance in X-ray imaging has revealed the dramatic three-dimensional shape of gold nanocrystals, and is likely to shine a light on the structure of other nano-scale materials.

Described August 7 in Nature Communications, the new technique improves the quality of nanomaterial images, made using X-ray diffraction, by accurately correcting distortions in the X-ray light.

Dr Jesse Clark, lead author of the study from the London Centre for Nanotechnology said: "With nanomaterials playing an increasingly important role in many applications, there is a real need to be able to obtain very high quality three dimensional images of these samples.

"Up until now we have been limited by the quality of our X-rays. Here we have demonstrated that with imperfect X-ray sources we can still obtain very high quality images of nanomaterials."

Up until now, most nanomaterial imaging has been done using electron microscopy. X-ray imaging is an attractive alternative as X-rays penetrate further into the material than electrons and can be used in ambient or controlled environments.

However, making lenses that focus X-rays is very difficult. As an alternative, scientists use the indirect method of coherent diffraction imaging (CDI), where the diffraction pattern of the sample is measured (without lenses) and inverted to an image by computer.

Nobel Prize winner Lawrence Bragg suggested this method in 1939 but had no way to determine the missing phases of the diffraction, which are today provided by computer algorithms.

CDI can be performed very well at the latest synchrotron X-ray sources such as the UK's Diamond Light Source which have much higher coherent flux than earlier machines. CDI is gaining momentum in the study of nanomaterials, but, until now, has suffered from poor image quality, with broken or non-uniform density. This had been attributed to imperfect coherence of the X-ray light used.

The dramatic three-dimensional images of gold nanocrystals presented in this study demonstrate that this distortion can be corrected by appropriate modelling of the coherence function.

Professor Ian Robinson, London Centre for Nanotechnology and author of the paper said: "The corrected images are far more interpretable that ever obtained previously and will likely lead to new understanding of structure of nanoscale materials."

The method should also work for free-electron-laser, electron- and atom-based diffractive imaging.

Red is the hot color at the women's gymnastics final. And the Americans may soon be seeing gold.

The United States, Russia, China and Canada all have red as the dominant color in their uniforms. The Americans and Canadians are all red with silver sequins, the Russians are red with white shoulders and the Chinese the traditional red with yellow accents.

The Russians used the uneven bars to carve into the Americans' lead, getting beautiful routines from Anastasia Grishina and Victoria Komova. But they faltered on the balance beam and Kyla Ross, Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman got through unscathed.

The United States still leads after three rounds, with a score of 138.230. Russia is second with 136.931 and Romania is third with 131.414.

The U.S. and Russia head to the floor now for the final event, with the first gold medal for the American women since 1996 within reach.
