Moog Music Animoog (for iPad)

Animoog is a $29.99 iPad App that brings the warm, expressive, fat sound inherent to 1970s monophonic analog synthesizers right to your fingertips. Moog Music says Animoog captures "the vast sonic vocabulary of Moog Synthesizers," complete with "a boutique's worth of high-end outboard and analog signal processors." It doesn't quite match the hardware Moog experience, but it's not that far off, either. Whether you fancy yourself the Tony Banks, Keith Emerson, or Pink Floyd type, or if Brian Eno or Thievery Corporation is more your thing, Animoog is a killer-sounding app.

User Interface and Controls
Animoog is designed to work as a standalone iPad app, without a MIDI keyboard attached, although you can hook a keyboard up if you have iPad-compatible peripherals. Animoog's interface makes interesting use of the iPad's screen. The keys themselves are easily adjustable in size and scale, and feature an interesting touch-plate sliding mechanism that increases expressiveness depending on where you strike the key and how you slide your fingers.

Above the keys, the on-screen oscilloscope is a ton of fun to watch as it evolves, and as the waveforms you create scroll across underneath. By moving your fingers, you can control various aspects of the sound right from the screen, without turning knbos or messing with sliders. If you prefer that, though, to the right are two panels of knobs and buttons, both of which you can swipe vertically to reveal three separate sections each. The sliding interface may disappoint the veteran keyboard player looking for a screen full of knobs that imitates the original Minimoog's front panel all at once, but even this is deceptive: Tap the ENV/MOD button at the top, and you'll see an onscreen representation of even more parameters. I found it intuitive, and frankly, a bit easier to focus on shaping the sound itself this way.

Sound, Sequencer, and Conclusions
And oh, that sound. This being a pure analog imitation, you can hear the slight differences as the "analog" oscillators waver slightly in and out of tune, and as the resonant filter adds its own character to the sound. The Constellation preset was particularly expressive, with beautiful, ambient synth textures fading in and out depending on how I slid my finger across each on-screen key. DawnWarmth offers a slow, very warm pad sound, with pitch changes at the end and a smooth legato as you drag your fingers across multiple keys. A new Random Preset button, added for version 1.4, randomizes all the parameters and creates a sound on the spot; if you love it, you can save the results.

The sequencer, such as it is, is really just a scratchpad. By tapping the Record button, I recorded a quick sequence with the delay locked to 134 beats per minute. Then I tapped Overdub, changed the preset sound, recorded a small riff on top, and then did that again with a third sound, for a total of three tracks and three sounds playing simultaneously. Cool, but without a click track, variable recording times, or any type of editing, it's only for the most freeform and spontaneous of composers.

Overall, it's tough to find much else wrong with this app. Animoog's price is quite high when compared to other iPad apps, but low when considered against a well-preserved, working original model, or any of the company's more recent, virtual analog synthesizers. BeepStreet Sunrizer ($4.99, 4.5 stars), our Editors' Choice, is much less expensive and arugably easier to control for synthesizer veterans, although its bright, crisp sound is sometimes lacking when compared to Animoog.

Google+ 'ghost town' next to Facebook: report

Google's neophyte social network isn't for everyone, for sure: A recent report found that since it started last summer, Google+ has been dominated by men, students and those who live in the U.S. or India. Posting warm and fuzzy family photos -- one of the big uses of Facebook -- showing kids, school talent video and smiling baby faces isn't quite as common yet on Google+, with many of its users being single.

In fact, Google+ is a "virtual ghost town compared with" Facebook, says the Wall Street Journal, citing new data from comScore that finds visitors on Google+ spent an average of 3 minutes a month on the site between September and January, compared to 6 to 7 hours on month on Facebook during the same period.

It appears the needle hasn't moved much since December, when comScore's Andrew Lipsman, vice president of industry analysis, said in a report, "State of the U.S. Social Networking Market," that Tumblr, with?15.9 million U.S. visitors in November 2011, was ahead of Google+, which had 15.2 million U.S. visitors in November.

"What is significant about Tumblr is not just its growing audience but how highly engaged its users are, with the average one spending 2.4 hours on the site per month," Lipsman wrote.

"While Google Plus nearly matches Tumblr from an audience standpoint in the U.S., it does not yet attract similar levels of user engagement on its primary web pages," he wrote.

It may be that we have reached social networking overload. Brian Solis, an analyst for the Altimeter Group, told the Journal:? "Nobody wants another social network right now. ... Google hasn't communicated what the value of Google+ is."

Paula Deen cuts portions, drops two sizes

Famous mostly for her fried chicken and gravy, Food Network chef and author Paula Deen is now getting noticed for her shrinking waistline. The 65-year-old Southern culinary expert, who announced in January she had type 2 diabetes, recently dropped two pants sizes, reports People magazine, the result of eating half-size portions and regular exercise.

Deen says while she doesn?t know how much she weighs, the better fitting wardrobe and improved lifestyle changes are all the encouragement she needs.

"We don't own a scale in our house," Deen tells People. "Every six months I go for a physical and find out. Now it's time to see the doctor. She'll be so happy if I've lost weight."

For fans concerned all this healthy behavior marks the end of Deen?s celebrated comfort foods, fear not. Though she may have reaped negative attention over the effects her rich menu have had on personal diet regime, she continues to feed audiences with her prized cuisine. In fact, the article points out a brunch she just hosted included nothing short of chicken and waffles, jambalaya, and strawberry margarita mousse. How?s that for sumptuous?

Earlier this year, Deen spoke to Al Roker about her health scare with diabetes, a disease typically associated with diets high in fat and sugar. The cook also addressed critics who blamed her for affiliating with corporate entities and encouraging Americans to eat poorly.

Deen replied, "Not everybody can afford to pay $58 for prime rib or $650 for a bottle of wine. My friends and I cook for regular families who worry about feeding their kids and paying the bills."

Fans of the peppy, no-frills chef offered words of support over her weight loss.

?Paula never said her recipes were healthy,? comments ?cowgirl? on People. ?We are all adults after all and should have enough common sense to eat sensibly and within our own limitations.?

?This is southern cooking, folks,? adds ?carci.? ?This is what she's known all her life, and what she's known for. We can all make our own choices, and most of us know not to eat that way every day, but if you want to make just one scrumptious meal once in a while for company, and you know they won't resist it, go for it.?

Others voiced a still-irritated opinion. Says Scoobymom628, ?Yes, we can make our own choices, but she still should have told the public. There are people out there that think, ?Look at her, eating all that wonderful bad food. If she can do it and stay healthy, so can I.? But she wasn't healthy and didn't say anything!?

Despite torrents of debate among African-Americans over the merits of the segregation-era movie "The Help," most still hoped that Viola Davis, who plays a maid, would become just the second black winner of the best actress Oscar.

And so there was widespread disappointment when Davis lost the Academy Award to Meryl Streep on Sunday night. Still, ambivalence tinged the reaction: Besides regret that the ranks of black Oscar winners remained small, many felt relief that a role viewed as stereotypical was not honored.

"Oohhhhhhhnnnnnnooooooooooooooo," wailed Robinne Lee on Twitter.

Lee, a black actress who has appeared in films such as "Seven Pounds" and "Hotel for Dogs," said in an interview that Streep embodies excellence and deserved to win. "But Viola had so much hype this year, and there was so much excitement, and it conjured up so much controversy in the black community about this role . so (the loss) was disappointing."

Yet Lee felt a mix of emotions, since she is eager to see more diverse movie casts in a wider variety of roles. Adding to the conundrum was the best supporting actress victory of Octavia Spencer, who played another maid in "The Help."

Prior to Sunday, only 13 black actors had won Hollywood's highest honor in the Oscars' 84-year history. Only Halle Berry had been chosen best actress, for playing a wounded soul who finds solace in the arms of a white man in "Monster's Ball."

In 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to win an Oscar, for a supporting role as a maid called Mammy in the Dixie-glorifying "Gone With the Wind." Since then, a high percentage of black Oscar nominees and winners have played characters such as slaves, African despots, welfare recipients, dysfunctional mothers, drug-addicted musicians or drug-dealing cops.

With Spencer's award, maid roles are responsible for two of the six Oscars won by black actresses. Streep, meanwhile, earned the third Oscar of her transcendent career for playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Which made Lee wonder: "How inspiring would it be if we could be nominated in roles where we are playing kings, queens, politicians, writers, artists, dancers . we could soar."

The debate over "The Help" made Hollywood's racial issues a recurring theme of Oscar night.

During a skit about what actors were thinking, host Billy Crystal imagined this for Davis: "I want to thank my writer and director for creating the role of a strong black woman that wasn't played by Tyler Perry." He also quipped: "When I came out of 'The Help' I wanted to hug the first black woman that I saw, which from Beverly Hills is a 45-minute drive."

Presenting an animation award, Chris Rock said the voice genre allowed fat women to play skinny or a wimp to play a gladiator. "And if you're a black man, you can play a donkey or a zebra. You can't play white, oh my God!"

Rock's observation resonated with Monika Brooks, a diversity consultant and self-described "movie dork."

"The problem is not that Davis played a maid," she said. "The problem is there's not more black people in really good roles."

Few, if any, black Hollywood executives have the power to "green-light" a film for production. Of the 5,765 people who vote on the Oscars, nearly 94 percent are white and 77 percent are male, according to a new Los Angeles Times study. The median voter age is 62.

That's why Brooks was not surprised by "The Help" being made or crestfallen when Davis didn't win: "Whoever writes the checks writes the rules."

As the Oscars approached, "The Help" was lambasted in some quarters of the black community. Many perceived it as another instance of black characters being "saved" by whites, or of serving only as vehicles to improve and enlighten white lives.

"Think of Will Smith in 'The Legend of Bagger Vance,' Michael Clarke Duncan in 'The Green Mile,' Anthony Mackie in 'The Adjustment Bureau' and Sir Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus in 'The Matrix,'" said Tour?, the cultural commentator who uses just one name, writing in Time.

Wrote the screenwriter and author James McBride: "It's the same old story: Nothing in this world happens unless white folks says it happens."

Watching "The Help" was torture for Tour?. But as a black man, he was disappointed that Davis lost.

"I hated the film but respect Viola's immense talent," he said in an interview. "I wanted her to get recognition for her talent and to get the power that comes with winning."

The Oakland activist and journalist Davey D said it seemed like a contradiction for critics to slam the film but support Davis and Spencer.

"Y'all should be happy the maid flick didn't win," he tweeted. It was nominated for best picture, but lost to "The Artist."

"The fear was Viola winning or 'The Help' winning would've validated keeping alive an image that many black folks found stereotypical, inaccurate and overall problematic," he said in an interview. "A win was seen as a setback."

Not for Barbara Young, who has worked for 17 years as a domestic worker and is an organizer for the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Watching the film, Young cried when Davis' character was separated from a white child ? she had endured several such partings in real life.

Young traveled from New York to Los Angeles for an Oscar viewing party organized by the National Domestic Workers Alliance. When Streep's name was called instead of Davis', the room of 50 people let out a huge groan.

"It was a very sad situation in that room," said Young, an immigrant from Barbados. "I was disappointed, but I was very grateful to the producers of the movie for bringing domestic work to the forefront."

She saw a simple reason for the criticism of the maid role: "It's not recognized as real work."

Davis certainly knows that it's real work ? her mother and grandmother both toiled as maids.

During Oscar season, Davis consistently advocated for a wider range of black roles. "I've played a lot of drug addicts," she said in an interview with Terry Gross of NPR.

And she told Tavis Smiley that black people who are ambivalent about "The Help" have a mindset that is "absolutely destroying the black artist," because it forces black actors to water down their performances ? to avoid character flaws that might offend oversensitive black audiences.

"The black artist cannot live in the place ? in a revisionist place," Davis told Smiley. "The black artist can only tell the truth about humanity, and humanity is messy."

TOKYO (AP) ? Computer chipmaker Elpida Memory Inc. filed for Japan's largest manufacturing bankruptcy Monday after amassing debts from nose-diving prices, competition from Samsung and flooding in Thailand last year that stifled demand.

Elpida, the only manufacturer in Japan to specialize in DRAM chips used in mobile phones and computers, reported debt of 448 billion yen ($5.5 billion) in filing for bankruptcy at Tokyo District Court on Monday.

That was the largest ever for a bankruptcy in Japan in the manufacturing field, according to Teikoku Databank, which compiles such information.

Elpida, set up in 1999 as a joint venture between Japanese electronics companies NEC Corp. and Hitachi Ltd., has been struggling for years to close the gap with rival Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea.

The Tokyo-based company, which employs more than 3,000 people, said its business was hit when DRAM prices declined from about 2007, and got worse with the global downturn.

The surging yen also came as a blow as well as intense competition, it said.

Elpida said the flooding in Thailand last year battered DRAM demand, furthering hurting its operations. Global hard-drive production was disrupted by the floods as Thailand is a major production base for hard-drive makers.

"We have concluded that, if we continue the business by ourselves, we will face cash shortage soon," the company said.

In 2009, Elpida got government emergency aid totaling 30 billion yen ($375 million) in investments through the government-owned Development Bank of Japan. Other Japanese electronics makers have pulled out of the DRAM business.

Some of my favourites. London has been impressive this Fashion week and has really put London back on the map!

I was lucky enough to work on the Faster by Mark Fast SS2012 Fashion show at New York Fashion Week sept 2011 and I?ll tell you the designer is a genius.

This collection is elegant, young and refreshing to see knits made so beautifully. I love the knitted plait dresses which are very different. The?fabrics?look luxuriously sheer and body conscious, together in those soft nudes and muted colours make the collection very sophisticated and wearable. I love the way his pieces are body conscious but so delicate especially the deliberate sheer panels across the bust that show a bit more skin, the cut out pieces across the hips, and lower back, the collar bones on show all draw your eye to the most feminine parts of the body making the pieces ever so slightly sexy and sensuous.

Erdem.?

My favourite. All hail Erdem. A killer collection yet again. I love the interesting mix of fabrics with black lace over tweed and leather. A little fetish like with the edgy fabrics but still remaining feminine with the sophisticated cutting, cinched waits, tight pencil skirts and capped sleeves. The fabrics are literally mixed up (see look no 4 from the left) with lace and florals combined but they all come together wonderfully. In love with the second look, black lace over the bright white trousers and and high neck silk no sleeves blouse cinched at the waist and balloons at the waist. Perfection. What is great about Erdem is it has its own style, a signature and its so recognisable. Erdem stays?true?to what it does best. Why change it up ?when you do what you do best to perfection?

I?ve recently become a fan of PPQ. I find the collections very unique and different. Especially this collection. There is a vintage feel to the collections with the high waisted high leg shorts, the off the shoulder sleeves, chiffon bow scarves tied at the side neck, side sweeped wavy hair and red lips, there is a a bit drama to this collection.?There is also something that looks a little Panotmime and costume like from the black/white tights making it fun and youthful as well. I think its wonderful.

Sweden's newborn princess to be named Estelle (omg!)

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Sweden's newborn princess and future monarch has a name: Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary.

King Carl XVI Gustaf announced his granddaughter's name, and said the baby girl, who was born Thursday to Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, will receive the title Duchess of Ostergotland, a province in southeast Sweden.

As Victoria's first-born child, she is second in line to the throne.

Estelle, a name of French origin, is unusual in Sweden and took royal watchers by surprise, though it isn't unprecedented in the royal family, which has French roots. Estelle was the name of the American-born wife of the king's godfather, Count Folke Bernadotte, a U.N. mediator in the Israeli-Arab conflict who was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948.

Silvia is the name of Victoria's mother and Ewa is Daniel's mother's name.

Mary is not common in the Swedish royal family, but it's the name of Denmark's Australian-born crown princess.

The king didn't explain the reasoning behind the names.

"We have now been given a little Princess Estelle in Sweden and we are all, particularly me and the family, very, very happy and joyful for that," he said.

Victoria and Daniel returned to their lakeside palace Thursday and have not appeared in public with the child.

The court's Mistress of the Robes, Alice Trolle-Wachtmeister, described the newborn princess as a "spitting image" of her mother Victoria.

Sweden's monarch is primarily a figurehead, representing the country as the head of state but with powers limited to ceremonial functions.

A?six-month?study by scientists at the University of Western Australia, Unilever and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia suggests that people who drink black tea throughout the day may get the benefit of a slight reduction in their blood pressure. Funding for the study was provided by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia and Unilever Research and Development, Vlaardingen, The Netherlands.

Before the study started, the participants' blood pressure throughout the day was about 121/72 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Blood pressure readings less than or equal to 120/180 mm Hg are considered normal.

The research,?now published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, is the first of its kind to show that drinking black tea may have this effect.

"High blood pressure can significantly impact people's risk of developing cardiovascular disease, so this is a very significant discovery," said Prof. Jonathan Hodgson at UWA. "There is already mounting evidence that tea is good for your heart health, but this is an important discovery because it is evidence of a link between the two."

In the study, 95 Australian participants aged?35?to 75 were recruited to drink either three cups of? black tea or another beverage similar in taste and caffeine content, but not derived from tea, daily for six months.

After the six month period the research found that the tea drinkers' systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure fell between 2 and 3 mm Hg compared to non-tea drinkers.

More research is required to better understand how tea may reduce blood pressure, although earlier studies reported a potential link between tea consumption and the improved health of people's blood vessels.

"This is a hugely exciting development for us," said Jane Rycroft, Senior Nutrition and Health Manager at Unilever's Research & Development laboratories.

"This is further evidence to suggest that tea and its natural ingredients can help people become healthier. While a 2-3 mm Hg decrease is a small change to an individual's blood pressure, it's tantalising to think what positive impact this could have on reducing the risk of heart disease among the general public."

Tea is the second most consumed drink in the world, after water. Unilever is the world's largest tea company, making brands including Lipton and PG Tips. Every year, consumers in more than 130 countries drink 117 billion cups of Unilever tea.

With less than 6 months until the London Olympics, British police, fire and ambulances tested their abilitity to deal with a terrorist attack during the games. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

LONDON -- The bells of St Clement Danes Church on The Strand chimed on the hour at 10 a.m.? Gray clouds hung low over traffic-filled streets and the cold chilled to the bone.

So a pretty typical February day in central London.

It became untypical at around 11, after two young men walked out of nearby Aldwych underground, or subway, station.? A few minutes later, a public announcement instructed everybody to leave the building. The trickle of commuters leaving the station became a torrent.? Some of them were irate, demanding an explanation from subway workers and police.? Others held their heads or limbs, seemingly wounded and in shock.

Sirens screamed and a helicopter hovered above.? Police vans, ambulances, fire trucks and a large green tent for the wounded clogged the narrow lane outside the station.? Dozens of first responders -- fire fighters in helmets and black-and-yellow outfits, ambulance workers, police officers and delighted-looking bomb-sniffing dogs -- milled around on the street.

The bad news: Word was that an explosive device had partially detonated deep in the Tube.

The good news: It was all part of a two-day drill on Wednesday called Operation Forward Defensive involving thousands of emergency personnel and volunteers.

Dozens of journalists and officials were observing an exercise of how emergency services, London City Hall, transport officials, Olympic organizers, the government and counter-terrorism units would react to a terrorist attack during this summer's games. According to the scenario, there had been an "incident" in Oxford Street Station, a major transport artery, on August 8, 2012, judged to be one of the busiest days during the Olympics.
